There is all this talk about the mini-14 and inaccuracy... how many of you have actually had first hand experience with this?

me too: hot when you can't hit shit with them
cold when someone says I should buy one worthless guns if you ask me. I have shot about 6 of them, couldn't hit anything. ludicrously inaccurate. |

I have an accurate Mini-14 but swapped out the original barrel for a Shilen heavy barrel.
Accurate and reliable with the right mags. Now that we can have mangled ARs I haven't shot the Mini in years |

I personally will say Mini's can still get accuracy gremlins.....but evenly tightening those gas-block screws cures 90% of the problems. I know of four mini-14's that went from 8"+ shooters down to 2.5" by doing that. And mine Did shoot about 2", started shooting about 7" groups.....never could fix it. Fun gun though I too someday will get a new Mini-14 View Quote what torque value are you dialing in to? |

slap a primary arms red dot scope on it, with a ruger 30mm ring mount, and you are totally in its performance envelope.
was using 2 different types of ammo for this. i believe the 20 rd group on the right is with cheap ass .223 monarch ammo, and the 10 rd grouping on the left is a better quality ammo, which i can not recall at this moment. both groups are 50 yards. |

pleasant to shoot, but had more fun with an AR |

I had to sell my AC556F clone due to the NY safe act here is the link with some photos http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_7_93/1269870_Ruger_Mini_14_folder__AC556_replica__FINAL_DROP__1275_shipped_.html
I took a stainless folder out of the folding stock & placed it in a fixed stock to make it NY legal, I have all the parts (Factory folding stock, ac556 front sight/gas block & flash hider) locked away to make another ac556 clone when I move out of this commie state, I can't wait to get to free America so I can cut & thread the barrel |

They are fun but it depends on what you want to do with it. If you want a "classic" look and and fun plinker, go for it. If you want a HD/SHTF rifle a good AR fills that role much better. I have one but it hasn't left the safe after I got an AR. I will probably sell it during the next gun rush, unless something happens my guess would be election time 2016. This is from a newer, 580 series, at 50 yards with PMC .223 View Quote i've seen guys with bolt actions who can't make a group that size at 50y. lots of them. |

I like mine. 80's vintage stainless. I've had it forever. Fun plinker and a reliable rifle. My ARs are more accurate, but I have room in my safe for the Mini too.

I still like mine. I wouldn't pay that much for one today, but it's a decent rifle that shoots better than people think it does.
Incidentally, anyone know where I can get a good M-14 style scope bracket for it? |

I do not understand why most corrections departments use the mini. The only reason I can come up with is cost, corrections do not use deadly force as much as other state agencies but when they do they need reasonable precision to avoid hitting other CO's and inmates. An ar would do the job with better accuracy and with prices on them now there is no reason to keep the mini in inventory

Quoted: I love all of mine. Good little accurate rifles, reliable, easy to maintain, fast handling and no "Sporing" sound when you pull the trigger. The new ones with the shorter heavy barrel shoot just as well as any other rifle and if you wish to add an AccuStrut to them you can tighten up groups to pretty amazing. Years ago they did suffer from some problems due to barrels that were made on machinery that was pretty worn out but the new ones don't have those issues. Pay no attention to the haters. Most of them have never even held one, much less fired one. They prefer to jump on the "Hate The Mini 14" bandwagon whenever it comes through town. http://www.accu-strut.com/gallery/mg_9914a.jpg View Quote Man, if I'm ever gonna own Mini-14s, they are all gonna have AccuStruts. USA brand was the worst! Depends on when you bought them. If you got them a few months before the AW ban passed in 1994, then they were okay. If you bought them anytime close to the AW ban passing in September 1994, then you got the crap mags. It is said that in the 10 days between Congress passing the bill and Clinton signing it, manufacturers cranked out millions of "pre-ban" mags, most of which were garbage due to non-existent quality control. They're probably still in circulation to this day. |

Picked up a Tapco 30 round polymer mag, I read those work well in the Mini 14.
