JACKSON, MI — The days of the small-town police force appear to be waning. In recent years, a handful of Jackson County townships have moved to other police service options, such as contracting with sheriff department, sharing services with neighboring communities or forgoing any extra police presence beyond 911 emergencies. What remains is a mixed bag. Of the county's 19 townships, eight maintain their own departments, six contract with the sheriff's department and the rest rely only on emergency response. "There's no true indication of a growing trend, but I do think more folks are looking at the contract approach due to the cost of funding your own department," said Jim Beelen, liaison of member information services for the Michigan Township Association, a nonprofit that offers support to townships. ... |

Contracting for small towns is the way to go. Most of those small town mayors want a police department to be their bitch force.
|

Small town departments can get incredibly corrupt. In my hometown 9 of the 14 members, including the chief were all related. People with military experience or EMT backgrounds would get rejected but the chief's two sons both got on with their main experience having been the town's most prolific drug dealers. It became not so funny when one of them got shitfaced and hit a guy on a bike in a take-home cruiser.

Yes the fat gov. Chris Chrisite is pushing county police departments, disbanding all the local ones, firing everyone and hiring back young kids at less pay

I foresee in the future....A national police force...
As with all local services, cities and states and feds tax the shit out of us to pay for everything. Then the money gets squandered. Next thing you know, they want to make toll lanes on the highways. Schools constantly ask for money from parents for extra stuff, or to supply school supplies or have fund raisers. I think this crap is going to eventually happen with every basic service. Local governments are going to complain that it is just too expensive for them to maintain this or that and they are going to try and pawn everything off to a higher level of government. Now your taxes won't go down, you are going to keep paying for them, but they are going to just funnel that money to .gov union employees and the federal government will just print more money to pay for the actual services. Examples:... Fed money funneled into schools already.. Toll lanes added onto you local highways with talk of making them all toll... Federal subsidies paid out to local PDs for manpower/equipment.. Call EMS and get transported, get a bill for the service..... This is shit that we already pay for yet for some reason the trend in the last few years is that we have to pay for it again somehow. That last one really pisses me off. I pay property taxes for fire/rescue. My daughter had to go the hospital one night for an asthma type attack when she was about 2. The god damn county sent me a bill for $400. Even though the insurance paid it is not the point. The fucking point is that F/D spends 90% of their time responding to calls in the hood and those full fledged FSA members don't pay taxes and they don't pay that $400 bill so why the hell am I expected to get nailed twice when I actually need the service that I already pay for?! |

Contracting for small towns is the way to go. View Quote Yep. Much cheaper and better service. The city i live in contracts with the Sheriff. The city seal is on the cars. The Deputies that drive them are assigned to the city. I think we pay for 50+ Deputies, 2 detectives several Sgts and a Lt. But It gives us access to all the Sheriffs assets like K9's, helicotpers, crime lab, evidence detail, homicide investigators, bomb squad, SWAT, ect. |

There are very few city police depts in Nebraska in the towns of less than 4-5k.

Small town down the road from me in SW Ok has 4-5 police officers.
Last year the chief drove his cruiser to the quick stop to buy beer and he was completely shitfaced. The lady in the quick stop called the pd and said someone needs to come get him. Another officer rolled up quick and took the chief home. They left the car parked at the quick stop overnight. Their dispatch was recently fired for smoking dope while on duty, that actually made the news. |
