LSAT could make some interesting changes, but not being reloadable, it'll probably be slow to catch on on the .civ side.

My guess would be optics that compensate for bullet drop and possibly windage. I know they're out there, but I'm thinking more streamlined platforms, like an Eotech that moves the reticle instead of having multiple dots.

Sure, why not. Too bad C4 is regulated, the chamber that would house the explosion would be much heavier than current ARs in 223/556, it would have terrible stress issues, and all the projos would have to be hardened steel coated in brass(which would have terrible ballistics, accuracy and be expensive as hell) to survive your attempted physics cheat.

Not caseless rounds, but telescoping rounds, likely with polymer cases.

Gunpowder mixes optimized for shot barrels, and low flash.

Material advances. Stronger steels, better coatings, better methods of application.

Better suppressor tech.

It's all in electro-optics.

Some in ammo.

We can argue back and forth all day about DI versus piston, but there will be no major breakthroughs in operating systems.

There will be no "revolutionary" grip or configuration or rail system, etc, etc.  A light, strong, reliable, simple, and flexible platform is all the advances in electro-optics need moving forward.

So you can expect to see the M4 for a VERY long time.  However, I do think that eventually advances in electro-optics will drive advances in ammo, so a round larger than the 5.56 will be required, but that is very very long off.

I'm gonna have to say caseless ammo with electronic ignition. Metal storm was almost there with the solid state action but reloading is a bitch. A bull pup, caseless, non-mechanical ignition, solid state action that is easily reloadable, accurate, ergonomic, and ambidextrous is the obvious goal. Doubt it will ever all come in one package though.

Edit: add active recoil management, and...
If a sniper can truly read mirage(wind) at distances between himself and the target at various distances by adjusting the parallax, a properly designed and programmed optic (with a rangefinder) should be able to do the same and given the correct load data and previous shot data, an algorithm should be able to calculate a best chance trajectory shot and place an electronic reticle at the correct location within the scope.

We're poised for an order of magnitude+ increase in battery capacity.

I think this will drive some interesting developments in the field of puttin' holes in things and making things stop working.
