Do you microwave or boil in a pot of water? How long for either method?

I would do several cups for reheats.

Always on a pot on the stove for me....

Regarding how much...read the directions?  2 cups of water for 2 cups of rice usually

Thanks for the info.

The directions that are on the bag that I have are a little vague and don`t list a 1 serving tip. I really don`t want to cook up the whole bag when all I want is enough for a 1 person side dish.

Do you ever add anything to the rice to add flavor while cooking it?

1/2 a cup. 1-1.5 can serve two people comfortably as the main carb with other foods

1/2 cup of rice

we just glob on the butter

I generally account for 1/2 cup uncooked rice per adult portion. I like to cook my rice in chicken stock. I use a rice cooker.

The only kind of rice "bag" I use is the one labeled "20 Lbs Long Grain Rice"

Rice Cooker FTW

I make my rice as needed - short (Japanese) or long (Basmati or Jasmine) grain rice depending on what is being served.  Rice reheats easily - make a bunch.

I do one handful per person.

Rice in pot, water to the first knuckle.

That's the tip of my finger touching the rice vertically.

Bring to boil    cover simmer about 25mins.

Uncooked rice, not parboiled.

Chicken Stock

I've used slightly less water, then added cream of chicken soup before it was done

you can rehydrate some chilis and put them in a blender and cook in that for mexican style

Sometimes I'll boil water separately, an electric kettle, then in the pot I'll dump some butter and the uncooked rice on high heat, stirring constantly, then dump the boiling water on to and cover, reduce to low for 20 minutes.

Sometimes I skip the boiling and just dump the water in cold, stirring until it boils then cover and drop the heat to low.

You can boil the water first then dump in the rice, once it comes back to a boil drop it to low and simmer for 20 minutes

Depending on the type of rice it's either 1/1 rice to water, or 1/2 rice to water

Once you put the lid on, don't take it off until the 20 minutes is up, after you have a good handle on this you can take the lid off for a second and give a quick stir with about 3-5 minutes left but it isn't needed.

If there is still some water left after the 20 minutes, leave it covered and turn off the heat, there should be enough heat in the pop/rice to absorb the rest

bring to a boil, then cover and reduce to low.

Simmer for 20 minutes and leave it alone, there is nothing you can do that will help for those 20 minutes, at least until you get good at cooking plain (or chicken stock) rice, then you can experiment a bit

ETA: I'm on a restricted diet and I eat rice pretty much every day, some times twice a day

Stove top: I bring it to a boil, as soon as it boils I cut the heat back to a simmer.  After about 10 or 15 minutes turn the heat off and let it sit , still covered, another 15 minutes. Rinse the rice until the water is clear before you cook it.  4 or 5 oz of rice is fine for one serving.  I usually make 9 oz. For the 2 of us and have a little left over.

We usually just douse it with a bit of soy sauce.

We have a rice cooker so we don't stove top it anymore.  We use calrose medium grain rice.

For one person a 1/2 cup of rice and just under a cup of liquid is plenty. But if you cook a full cup of rice you can make great fried rice the next day with the leftovers

I also use chicken stock usually instead of water.

Heat oil in a stock pot

Add as much chopped onion as you like and a good pinch of kosher salt

Stir until just translucent then add as much minced garlic as you like

Stir for about a minute then add the rice. Stir that around for another minute or so, until the oil is gone and the rice smells slightly nutty.

Add the liquid, stir and bring to a rolling boil

Reduce the flame as low as it will go, cover the pot

After about 15 minutes listen to the pot. If you still hear liquid boiling let it go another couple of minutes

Turn the heat off and let it sit for 5 minutes

Stir it with a fork and enjoy

If I'm making rice to go with a main dish already being cooked, I try to make enough rice so that I can freeze the leftover main item in the same container as the appropriate amount of rice.

That way, when I reheat the container, it has the rice already there with the swedish meatballs or whatever, and it's all good to eat at the same time.

1 cup of brown rice, 1.75 cups of water. Bring water to a boil, pour a teaspoon of olive oil and add a pinch of salt. Pour in brown rice, stir and keep on reduced head for 45 minutes with the lid on.

I eat 1/2 of the pot and save the rest for later.

I prefer quinoa though. It cooks in 15 minutes and has more protein.

Something I cook up every so often:

A bag of long grain brown rice (1 lb I think)

A can of Cream of Mushroom Soup

A can of Cream of Chicken Soup

A packet of dried French Onion Soup mix

Four chicken breasts (can use thighs if you prefer - the dark meat doesn't get as dry as the white meat)

Use plenty of water, whatever the rice package says plus a can of water for each of the cans of soup.

Mix up the rice and onion soup mix and pour into a 13x9 dish, place the chicken on top and covet with your canned soups. Cover with foil and bake at 350* for an hour or so. (until the chicken is done)

Serves four. Is wonderful. I've thrown it all in a crockpot before I go to work and have a wonderful smelling house when I get home.

Doesn't matter how you cook it, as long as you don't burn it. Yes some people can burn a pot of water.
ANYWAY back on topic. Always make enough for 2-3 meals.  You then have left over to make fried rice, rice w/ chorizo & eggs for breakfast burrito (here's where you add that extra green chili you froze way back when) AND one of my favorites reheated rice with butter , add salt to taste.

FWIW: Cold left over fried rice runs a close second behind cold pizza as a midnite snack, or for breakfast. YMMV

Leftover rice is good.  We use a slightly sticky medium grain rice.  I'll make a golf ball sized ball o' rice out of cold leftover rice and drip a little soy sauce on it.  Good snack.

Anything really

Chicken Stock
I've used slightly less water, then added cream of chicken soup before it was done
you can rehydrate some chilis and put them in a blender and cook in that for mexican style

That recipe sounds REALLY good!

Are you the "Main Chef" in your humble dwelling good Sir? The ladies seem to like guys who know how to cook!  I am always interested in learning something new to treat a date with. GD hasn`t let me down so far!

I am the best cook in the house.

once you get a handle on the plain rice try the cream of chicken soup idea (or any other cream of soup you might like), then serve some sliced grilled chicken and steamed broccoli, or some roasted root vegetables

I have some weird dietary restrictions so I tend to cook for myself even if people cook something else

oh and don't worry if you get a layer of rice that sticks to the pan, that happens, just soak in cold water and it cleans up easy enough

Thank you for your advice!
I`ll try some of the menu suggestions that you stated. Do you use a Wok to steam your veggies in or something else?
