Why not just buy another one?
My T520 is holding up well, to daily, multi-hour use. How on earth did you make a hinge come loose? |

Which model do you have?

I just got this guy and I'm super happy with it. 9-10hour battery life for the first week or so. Starts up in less than 5 seconds. Only downside is memory, but nothing that a big micro-SD or USB flashdrive can't fix.

For your intended purposes I say Chromebook. I have an ACER I picked up for <$200 to do the exact same things. Battery life is amazing and it does everything well. Zero complaints.

Chromebook would be a great choice if one with do everything you need.
Asus is coming out with a $200 Win8 laptop. It looks great for $200. 2gb ram kinda sucks though. cheap asus laptop |

my sister and aunt have the lenovo g500 and it seems to hold up for them just fine. from the sounds of it a surface would be nice for you too.
