Hard to compare quarterbacks from different eras since the game now is much different than it was in the 70's and whatnot.

I say Montana but I grew up watching him play. We tend to let emotions dictate these type of arguments. Manning might be the smartest QB but I think Montana was a better player.

It is really hard to compare QBs honestly.
With different eras you have different advantages. Now the rules favor passers and receivers. However, back in the day there was no salary cap, meaning you could keep a better team together longer. Also, defensive players were smaller back then and the league was not so pass centric. A stud like Marino is going to stand out more when there fewer elite rivals. Go back far enough and roids were legal. Go back even farther and there are no black guys. How do you begin to factor in that? Also, what stat counts the most? QBR, TDs, Passing YRDs, Wins, Playoff Wins, Super Bowls Wins? |

As stated is very hard to say a greatest quarterback, there is many factors. A lot of times great quarterbacks have awesome wide receivers to make them great. Even though I'm a Packer fan I don't think Aaron Rodgers is better than Brett Favre. Rodgers had a lot of left overs from the "Favre era". Sure there was some good (and great) WR at the start of the Favre era but I don't believe no other quarterback more great WR than Brett Favre.
So yes I do think Brett Favre is the best QB with Dan Marino second for a lot of the same reason. ETA: I do think Tom Brady is the third best of all time. From being a 7th round draft pick (that no one remembers) to having several SB rings. |
