Full delete (EGR / DPF / etc) at 21k miles.

Spartan Tuner  (Fellow forum member here - SpartanDieselTech)

4inch ceramic coated down pipe to 5 inch straight pipe out now.

Kendall DXA 15w40 every 7000 miles.  All fluids changed once a year (transmission / rears / anti-freeze / etc.)

0 issues. All fluids are sampled and tested.  125k miles, all clean samples and documented in a binder.

I did install a Detroit TrueTrac locker in it, S&B Stage II airbox,  Banks charged air cooler and dual steering stabilized.  Extra spring in the rear for some heavy loads, all billenstein shocks.

Was debating a leveling kit, but I'm worried that I'll be too tall for my goose neck cattle and equipment trailer.

Had a brush guard on it... cheap go rhino or something. Broke, will replace it this year with a solid Ranch Hand one or the like.   Once a year it goes in and gets all scratches & rust fixed. (Just did it while I was out elk hunting last week.)

Nice!  Sounds like you maintain it better than 99% of truck owners.

Just a DPF delete and similar exhaust and same intake here.  EGR is turned off in the Spartan tuner, haven't deleted it yet.  If they would just fix the rev slamming issue...   Rotella T6 5W40 every 5k, fuel filters every 15k, other fluids and filters once a year.  Only motorcraft filters.  Water separator gets drained every couple tanks.

OP check Craigslist for people trying to get out from under trucks they can no longer afford.  You can find some deals there.  Also might try FB groups and the like for people trying to move them quick.

Add aftermarket leather for about $500

For what its worth at dealerships it runs about $1500 for leather seats not 5-10k

The Ford dealer here is running adds for $15k off sticker.  The Chevy is around 10k off.  I picked up a F150 XLT 4x4 Crew stickered at 44k for 29k a few years ago.  In full disclosure I did trade in a 200k mi XJ that I couldn't get $1500 for on craiglist.  (multiple wrecks, CEL, etc)

It was a way better deal to buy new than used.  They had the same truck used on the lot with 20k miles on it 1 year old and wanted $36k for it.   I liked 5.0 > EcoBoost though.

sure you you can drive what you want. but don't come on here bitching about what it costs to buy/fuel/maintain after your dumb ass buys it.

and I posted a link to a local truck, 10 years old, 4x4, f-250  with only 44k on it for under 20k. truck easily has another 10 years in it.

It's the overall packages that end up making them $5k-$10k more.

Aftermarket leather? That sounds like a bad idea not sticking to factory seat options, your $500 aftermarket leather isnt going to make the seats power/heated/cooled like they would he with the factory upgrade option.

I ran Kendall SHP 5w40 for a while, was getting aluminum back in my oil samples.  Not a Rotella fan... their 15w40 is junk oil.

Went to DXA 15w40 and it went away.

I change fuel filters every oil change, never had a filter issue.

With the way the used market is, this isn't necessarily true anymore.

For around $30k I think its possible to find a better deal on a new truck than a used, as some of the posts in this thread have shown.

Bought this a few years ago for $5k. Its a 91 and only 110k miles on it and it was in great shape. I originally was in the market for a Tacoma 4door cab or similar but there's nothing new under $30k and used isn't that much of a deal either. I gave up and went old school. Put a 6" lift on it and I'm very happy with it. Maint is cheap and parts are everywhere for these old Chevy's.

And can tow 5,000lbs.. if that...

I think stock 3/4 ton C-20s were rated at just north of 10k lbs originally. Stock 402BBC was rated at 400 ftlbs...

Of course, its pretty unlikely that anyone using one as a dedicated tow rig left the stock motor in it.

It's not the going, it's the stopping.

Front disks became standard in 71 I believe. My 72 with stock brakes (factory power PB, disk front, drum rear) and wide Nitto 420s can lock all four up at the drop of a hat. Other than ABS (which isnt a big deal if you know what you're doing)... whats the difference? Brake tech hasnt changed a whole lot in a very long time.

Not saying I'd pull a 10k lb boat across country in my '72, but those trucks were plenty capable for most every day towing tasks.

Plus they're sexy bone stock and all tricked out

Yeah, I will stick to my $226.00/ mo payment for another year on my commuter and rent a home deport truck or enterprise pick up for the day if I need a hauler.

Someone here said to look at the Enterprise sales for used pickups..I may do that if I really want one.

Right now, I just don't see the value in them (for me).

The same can be said about them going where 4wds will not go as well.

Ive been dealing with this the past two months.  The market is a joke right now.

2015 Ram 2500 Diesel with the Decent trim package here is going for 56k. Unreal. Laramie package with Leather bumps it to 60+  Fly to Idaho and it can be had for 45k out the door.

Settled for the same package on a 2012 truck with 80k miles for a tick under 30k.

Still feel I'm getting screwed, but unlike most people I need a truck for work, and the last Ram I had and just sold was a 03 that I brought to 230k miles. Hoping to get the same 130k miles out of this one @ 15k miles a year.

Tell me about it, she won't listen though I generally do all the work on our vehicles.
I'm making her take it to a mechanic that her family has trusted over the years so he can talk some sense into her.

I get emotional about cars so I get it but she's off on the deep end right now.

Seriously, I'm no slouch when it comes to cars but I have no idea about 4x4 stuff.

Last spring I bought a 2012 F-150 4x2 5.0 with an 8ft bed. 8k miles for $18k... I don't think that was such a bad price considering what I got for it.

OP, I don't know wtf you're talking about with the 5.0 being sluggish- this thing is screamin' fast! The EcoBoost can just slightly outrun it, but I can beat a lot of mid-class sports cars. It's still a 360 HP V8.....

I'll never buy another new truck, unless to work with it. They're just a fucking sinkhole of depreciation...grossly over-wrought, over-complicated, and over-priced luxury vehicles.

I'd rather drive an affordable car at half the cost, and rent a truck on the rare occasions I need one. I'll be money ahead, and drive a better-handing car inbetween.

I used to love trucks, but they got retarded.

I drive old beater pickups until they are scrap metal, but I keep my wife in new-ish low mileage rigs so here goes...

The F150 EcoBoost is sweet.  They're sure as hell not cheap and the used market is all kinds of crazy right now.  You may well be able to find a deal on a new 2014 F150 as 2015 models start to take over.  I have a friend that bought a 2013 and loves it.  Crew Cab, 4x4, etc.  Not sure about the leather.  Very nice truck.

OTOH, sometimes the incentives on the new model is greater than the savings on the old model.

Even the 2011 and 2012 EcoBoost trucks are pulling $30K plus on the used market.

Right... absolutely no chance of a bait and switch or funky dealer financing there.

Find a garaged older 1999-2002 pickup (any manufacturer).  You'll still pay less, the pickups themselves and the motors are better quality.

It's not just that dealer pricing them like that, I was looking towards the end of last year and the first of this year and several dealers within 100 or so miles of me were cutting similar deals (on the 2013s) at the time, if you can wait a few months they will get ever sweeter to get rid of the "old stock" of 2014s. To get them at this price you do have to finance thru the dealer (they get a kickback for every vehicle financed, which means they can take a little less for the truck and make the same "profit") but the rates are as low or lower than i could get thru several banks and credit unions, plus if you want to pay it off the next day, you can.

Ended up buying my wife a new van and me holding off for a few more years, thinking I may buy a "fun car" and keep my current DD (97 Chevy w/t) for truck stuff, but I may change my mind again when it's time to buy.

There are several dealers in the South West Boise area and in South Central area.  IF you are serious about Chevys or Dodges.......DAVE SMITH DEALERSHIP  in the Cottonwood area, which is more North Central.  Just about any area in Idaho will be cheaper(as in 12k-15k cheaper) than South Eastern Idaho.

This, not sure where you are looking OP but there are plenty of very nice trucks to be had in the $25-35k range. And that's new, you can get very very nice used trucks easily in the price range.
