I've read it was between $500,000 and $600,000 for this one:

You can't easily build one. Even the later models had cast turrets and some models had cast hulls too. The cost just for material to build a low grade steel welded hull would bankrupt most people.

So all I would have to do is make a large mold and fill it?

A guy here locally that I know was in the UK several years back. He stumbled upon several Chieftain tanks being sold for scrap. He bought one and had it shipped back here. It was in running condition and he didn't have to put hardly anything into it, at first.

In order to keep it in running condition, he got lucky and found a mechanic with experience with them. He also had a hell of a time keeping it dry enough inside when not using it, moisture is not its friend.

He had a farm where he would play with it and have friends shoot at him and tear shit up. He did get tired of it and the expense and sold it to another guy. He did make a profit on it even figuring the costs of bringing it over.

Of course tons of people want tanks but initial purchase price plus maintenance costs make actually owning one a no go for 95% of those people.

If you're talking about building  a full size 1:1 scale replica German panzer or even a Sherman  from the ground up and to original specs that would be a massive undertaking. Almost everything would have to be custom made and in short runs which would make each part massively expensive. The raw steel alone would cost well into the 6 figure price range on a Tiger I.  They would have to be assembled mostly by  a small team of highly paid experts in the field, and would probably take months to complete. Each finished one would end up costing millions or tens of millions by the time it was all said and done.

Can't be done.  EPA would not allow it.

Not exactly the same; but when the Marines looked at the AAV 7 it would cost 10-11 million a piece it bought today

You could probably find modern MBTs for cheaper.

First you have to be able to melt enough steel for your pour, because your casting has to be one-piece.  Not very many places left in the US that can handle producing such large castings.  Those that can are probably all tied up in M-1 Abrams production.

It's the reason some railroad historical societies who have wanted to cannot build reproduction steam locomotives.  Nobody can produce cast frames that large in the US anymore and the cost to ship one from overseas, if someone would take the contract to produce one, would be prohibitive.

How the fuck does a Leopard 1A1A4 cost less than a fucking Stuart or a Sherman?

I don't fucking right now.

I've thought that casting an aluminum hull and turret (since you're not actually going to war) and powering it with an adapted Cat motor and bulldozer transmission might reduce costs. An aluminum Sherman would be easier to transport, too.

if you're not going into battle, then you could build the body out of fiberglass. use tubing for the frame and chassis.

I suspect you could build a road-able lightweight facsimile of a tank for not a huge amount of money.

There is a company in the UK that makes some replicas out of modern chassis, let's see if I can find the link.
