My wife and I have been together since she was a senior in HS and I was a freshman in undergrad.  Coming up on 15 years now.  In a few weeks it'll be our 5th wedding anniversary.  We've got an amazing son that we both love to death but paying for his daycare is like funding a little drug addict.  So there's no way I can see us having any more kids short of winning the lottery.

Now I won't get into her issues but after looking at all the advances in modern science to control things on her end, she refuses to.  So now I'm considering taking one for the team and taking charge of the issue on my end.  But to be honest, other than talking to a buddy about it at my last job...who told me he was sore for a week or so...and knowing they disconnect the plumbing...I know very little about it.

Any info would be great, but there are a few things I'm curious about...

First off, does insurance usually cover it?  (We have the absolute best insurance I've ever seen!!...$10 copays on all visits and rx).  If not, what's something like that go for out of pocket?  Depends on carrier. I think my cost was $200.

What's the recovery process actually like?  Do you pretty much lay in bed for a week or can you walk the next day and the guy I work with was just a pussy?  You'll walk out when done, but I recommend taking it easy and having a bag of frozen peas handy.

Any down-sides to it functionally speaking? Nope. Same juice, no seed.

What else is there to know? There is a possibility of complications. I had some issues and going to a academy ten days after the procedure was a bad idea, but I survived. I would recommend getting a valium from the Dr. that you can take before the procedure.

Thanks!

I think that covers it.

This pretty well sums it up. To add: I had surgery on Friday and went to work Monday (office job in a cube). For about a month I had some Phantom pains. Not constant but felt like someone flicked the sack at odd and not consistent times (imagine a midget following you around and randomly flicking you). Take the Valium and follow the docs instructions or reap the penalty (swollen and bruised balls). It's really not that bad.

Simple enough. Your wife is right--if you really feel this way, you should take care of it. It's much less invasive and certain on your end. I hate needles and have never had surgery or anything and I survived it.

When I had it done, we had good insurance. I paid the specialist doctor copay for the first appointment and that was it. I got a recommendation from a friend on who to see.

Take it easy afterwards. Just plan on sitting around all weekend (my doctor pretty much only did them on Fridays). Ice packs and, believe it or not, warm baths really help. Let me reiterate. Don't do anything strenuous for 3 days. Use it as an opportunity to let the wife cater to your needs a bit and relax. Use something supportive afterwards for a few weeks. I am a boxers man and wore briefs. I tried to switch back too soon (about a week after) and regretted it. I stuck with the briefs for about 6 weeks after that mishap.

The doctor can explain all the nitty gritty of how it works, but the basics are that the swimmers can't get to the pool anymore and just die out. Everything else functions normally. You asked about reversal earlier. Basically, the way he explained it to me is that sometimes, he said your body gets really good at metabolizing them and creates an environment where even after reversing the procedure, it can be nearly impossible to go back on the "active" roster.

Also, make sure you go back for the follow ups and use a backup contraceptive until you're cleared. For me that was like 3 months, I think.

Don't feel bad.  When watching the video on it and seeing the doc talk his way through poking a hole, snipping, clamping, and burning...I was squeamish to.  But when considering the reward of it, and the minimal recovery time I know I can do it.  But I'm going to do ALL the homework on it before offering the ultimatum.

That's what the Valium is for. I was joking with the doc and nurse. My body wears numbing agents off very fast. Second testicle and I felt the scaple cut. Nurse said we can fix that. I replied we better cause I don't have enough to play with. Valium makes what would be a very unsettling procedure seem like a walk in the park. Same thing for my LASIK. One Valium and I'm bullshitting through the procedure..

For those not ready to get taken out of the game, an IUD for the lady works well. They even have ones that don't have any hormones to them. Lasts like 5 years or something.

I'll get clipped someday, just not yet.

I actually just got snipped last week (not this past Friday but the one before it). My insurance covered it 100% and I'm sure most insurance plans are similar. Its basically preventative medicine for insurance companies.

Recovery wasn't bad. Two days laying around taking it easy and then I was back up and doing shit. My junk was sore for a week or so though. It felt like perpetual blue balls. I have to give credit to the hydrocodone though. I made sure to tell the doc that I was very concerned I'd have some sort of involuntary and violent reflex once he got ahold of my balls, so he made sure I had a bit extra sedative and local anesthetic.

The actual procedure was the worst part. The initial anesthetic injection stung like a bitch but after it took effect, there was no pain. the sensation of him tugging on my innards was rather unpleasant.

Anyway, I have a son and new baby daughter so my family unit is now complete. Figured it was best to make sure we didn't get any future surprises.

Plus there's a place that does it the next block over from my office.

But worth it!

Is anyone freaked out with the fact your sperm are swimming around insider your body every time you do the deed?

Did you cut back on the fappin because of the above?

Also, anyone concerned about the Biblical aspects (Deuteronomy 23:1) of it?

I'm not sure God is opposed.  Last I checked, He didn't even need sperm to knock a woman up.  His Will will be done.

If I'm wrong...well, I've done worse things...it's a good thing He forgives, or I wouldn't have had a shot at Heaven anyway.

I'm kinda hoping for that, I know it's not unheard of.  Wife doesn't want any more kids, but I do, just can't afford them right now.  In 5 years though, should be good, lol, and having been snipped I just pull the God's Will card and grin all the way to the delivery room.

For the next 3 years though those dudes better remain fixed, though.

After the shot, which my doc surprised me with (1 to 2 seconds of pain which I never saw coming) it was easy peasy, no big deasy.

Make sure you do what they tell you to. Ice 'em down. Rest. Keep them supported. And you will be good to go.

Oh, and pro-tip........be the first appointment. My doc scheduled them all on the same day, so the waiting room was full of guys. I went first, and when I walked out (and you will stand up from the table like nothing happened) I knew that everyone was looking at me expectantly. So what did I do? I started shuffling my feet, a little bent over, pained look on my face. Walking slow, holding onto things, wincing in pain.

You could hear a pin drop.

When I got out the door, I skipped down to the car like nothing happened, but none of them knew that. I can only imagine how many guys chickened out after.

Make sure yore numbed up.  The geezer that did mine didnt numb me enough and it was like two kicks in the balls.  I passed out and have posted this inother threads.  Now, 8 mos later they sent me a bill for $550.  Stupid insurance.  I sent the doc a letter requesting a discount for the pain.  Well see if he gives it to me.

+1

First thing that popped into my mind when I read the response.

My daycare bill is almost as much as my mortgage!  When all is said and done I'll have paid around $70K JUST for day care for one child.

So another update...

I called a local hospital network and got the name of three Dr.s that supposedly did this no-scalpel vasectomy.  Well a few phone calls later...there's only ONE Dr. in my area that does it!  So it's either him or expand my travel area.  But he seems pretty experienced and well regarded.

I figure I'll do a follow-up call and get some more questions answered before scheduling a consult...that way I don't waste the gas if he does something concerning with the way he does it.

Also, they said the consult could be done 48hrs from now and wait time for the procedure is 1-2 weeks.

So my game plan at this point since my guns are loaded is to sit down and give the ultimatum as encouragement for her to take care of herself (I didn't share it but the main reason why this became an issue is because SHE is experiencing severe pain that an IUD would significantly help to decrease)...if not I'll gladly get snipped.  Won't help her pain but it'll make condoms unnecessary.

Going to go against the crowd here.

I don't believe young men should be so eager to have it done.   Wait until 40 + at least.  People change and situations change.

And has anybody seen any long term studies done of any possible long term  effects on men.??

Yeah it's easy to do.  Difficult to undo.

I agree with the previous poster that an unplanned pregnancy is a huge deal.

However, when looking at long term studies...how long have they been doing these for?  I'm not sure how long qualifies as safe but I'm guessing we have have to be in the ballpark by now.  Plus it's just snipping a tube that carries sperm.  It's not like we're clamping off the kidneys or blocking the heart.

You want to squirm?

When i had mine done, I didn't know I was one of the lucky few that topical agents do NOT work on. That's right, no numbing at all.

About halfway through the procedure, I'm literally white knuckled bending the bars off the procedure chair. Doc says "you really feel this?" I which I respond "FUCK YES, you have two fingers on my sack right now!"....

Doc goes "hmmmm..... guess we have two choices here. Grit your teeth and let me finish or I can stop, send you to the ER so we can do a general. What do you want to do?"

That when I say "fuck me!.... just finish up"

Ol' Doc had a sense of humor. He said, " ok I'll finish up quick as I can but you'll have to ask your wife about the other. You're too butch for me"

Great guy even though I was hating him at the moment.
