Do Serbs like Bacon as much as U.S. Americans do? As dule1977 said, we do. Most of the people do, but as an addition to some meals (f.e. added into the minced meat or something) but if you like it, you eat it raw. Oh, and good bacon is pricey here. ~4$ for a pound |

This is a very interesting thread, thank you for doing it.
My wife is Russian - more accurately Ukrainian, which she is more sensitive about lately - and I can confirm the raw bacon thing. Many of other the things you mention (organic fruit trees in you're yard, homemade booze and dried meat in the cellar, krasiva stroynia deavatchkas, love/hate of cultures from historical conflict etc) are very similar. I'd love to come visit Serbia someday. One question I have for you is, do you see yourself living in Serbia for the rest of your life, or would you like to move to another place like the US if you could? I've also worked with lots of eastern Europeans doing software development, they love their cultures and visit family at home frequently, but would never consider moving back home. You had asked what Americans think of Serbia. Speaking for myself, although I think its a valid generalization for most Americans, we don't know enough beyond military and war history to have an opinion. Being with my wife for 10 years helps me get a feel for the issues, but unless there is a natural disaster, violent event, or celebrity hilarity, our daily media doesn't give us much current news. Good luck in your career, I'd be happy advise you if you're considering a US software company, I've worked for a big one for decades. AMA too! |

I know you said the M70 is the standard rifle used by the Serbian Army but I've seen photos of Serb troops on training exercises using East German & Romanian AKM's any reason?

Beautiful country destroyed by war.
What is the beer known as Nick's or Nik's there? |

Not sure honestly. During the 90's, Zastava produced bunch of random stuff (literally just mashing together various grips/stocks/barrel guards), I've seen some semi-auto PAPs looking similar to that.
But again, it is possible that we got them somehow from Germany or Bulgaria, I will try to ask around :) |

USA didn't need to get involved. As they shouldn't be involved in lots of conflicts. But they had to because Europeans are a bunch of liberal pussies that love sucking the US taxpayers dry. Might makes right between nations. It always has and always will. They don't follow rules except when it suits their interests. So eff em. It would be Serbia again if we hadn't intervened to hand their heartland over to the hadjis. Given the benefits which have accrued from that choice, it appears suboptimal. |

Pretty much the people who are Muslimi in that part of the world 1. Invaders and their offspring 2. Converted to Islam when it was dominant to get a better life, fucking over their fellow Christians Pretty much? Not even close. So, the Muslims peacably immigrated there from Mecca? Nope. The only non-Christians there got there by having ancestors who invaded the area or are the descendants of original inhabitants who converted to Islam. Grossly oversimplified but true. So grossly oversimplified that it's just as untrue. eta I will expand upon this as you request when I got some time tonight Are you really gonna spew your "History according to albanians" BS again ......? |

My only beef with Serbia is that during the civil war, you had ethnic Hungarians doing alot of the initial fighting which didn't seem right to me at the time.
I see no beef today as I live in Szeged and I see alot fo Serb plates from Subotica and Zenta and other places at the shopping malls in Szeged. |

So, I asume based on your logic you would have no problem with Indians going around slaughtering "European Traitors" known as Americans? Or Roman ancestors (Italians) conquering Germany, Greece, France, England, etc... because it used to belong to them...(you mean they conqured those areas, then lost them, big difference) You have no idea about the subject matter and my guess your hatred for a certain religion makes you much more ignorant regarding this matter. One thing you got correct. USA didn't need to get involved. As they shouldn't be involved in lots of conflicts. Majority of the bosnian muslims use to be orthodox or catholic prior to converting to islam under the ottoman empire .... Fuck em. No sympathy for them. Was none of our business. We just got in the way of the Reconquista. If the handwringers were around in Spain it would still be Muslim. I don't support murder and rape but if the Serbs wanted to take their land back from the traitor Christian/Turned ROPer's offspring and the children of the ROPer invaders, what business do we have there? I'm not giving anything back. But if they were able to kick us out, I wouldn't cry about it (The way the Muslim invaders have, begging Christians to save their asses) and I could understand it. We shouldn't be involved in many places, you and I do agree on that. and a FIFY red part. |

That makes as much sense as Palestinians demanding Jews to leave Israel. |

Ok, trick question.... How do you, if you do, remove Kebab? Serbia stronk! :D. I've actually been on a wedding where they played that song Anyhow guys, here is my opinion on the '90s war. After Slovenia got it's independence (with surprisingly small number of victims), everyone realized that SFRY is falling apart. Then, some (a-hole) leaders gathered people around the religious/nationalist causes, to try to take biggest peace of cake. It was a free-for-all, a scramble for territory (and factories/resources spread through the country). But the thing is, the seat of YPA (Yugoslavian People's Army) was in Serbia, so in the start, Serbia had the most manpower/war resources. Smart lobbying against that, made us the bad guys (Muslims and Croats got plenty of international help to even the odds, while our army got crippled by diplomacy). So then, some other Serbs started gathering volunteers for paramilitaries, to avoid those diplomatic issues (and, at the same time, to evade the "communism" issue in YPA). And, as in every war, some people fought for survival, some fought for money, some for religion, some just because they had a thirst for blood. And those people could be found on all the sides in this war. So it would be the best for us to get over it, since fighting a war that is long over brings us nothing but useless hate these days. We should try helping each other instead (remember, as an example, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia and Serbia were able to make one of the best t72 copies in the world, and that tank was among the best when it got introduced. Cooperative industry could bring prosperity to the whole region, but it wont happen if people keep getting butthurt over a war that ended 20 years ago |
