So I was in NY picking up some gear I stored at a friends house in NY. I had 8 empty 50 call ammo cans and a Pelican carbine sized case with a soft case inside.
I was headed home to my new home in PA going up 17 when I got pulled over for allegedly speeding. Trooper approached I produced my stuff. He looks in the back seat and asks what's in the cans and the case. I said air. He asks to take a peek I politely refuse. Visibly angry he starts to tell me about the gun sniffing dog NYSP have and that under the SAFETY act he has the right to detain me. I smiled and said Oh really? Tell ya what Sir. I will wait for the dog. He stepped back flummoxed. He started with if there's nothing in the cans and case how come I can't look. I told him the 4th ammend. Is why.He mumbled something to the affect of me being one of those guys and then asked me if I was a lawyer. I replied no I have a soul. I then asked him how long did he think the dog would take to get here. He told me to sit and walked back to his car. I also asked him if the SAFETY act was the same as the SAFETY act. He didn't answer. 15 mins later he walks back throws my stuff at me and tells me I'm lucky he has a "crime call" and takes off lights and siren. 5 mins later I see him at a gas station just sitting there. I chose to go to a different station so as not to press my luck. I know CSB but.... Be wary. ETA I'm also Retired LE and produced my retired cred hence no ticket I guess. But he was dying to get in those cans. PS I've never had a negative interaction with a NYS Trooper before this. But this kid wanted the big pinch I guess. |

Good on you for sticking up for your rights. Ya might want to slow down driving through the People's Republic of New York!!

Don't worry. Those cops won't enforce those unconstitutional laws.

I also asked him if the SAFETY act was the same as the SAFE act View Quote This? |

You didn't repeat "Am I being detained" over and over?
Is it illegal to have guns with you in NY, even if you're passing through on your way to somewhere else? |

Nice, I get to drive to Albany on Tuesday. Leaving my CCW and taking my 870P. It's the only NY legal gun I own. I might go hunting while I'm there.

That happened exactly like that Seriously??? You're calling out a guy who's been a good member here since '02?! Wow. This is GD. All the experts will be here telling my I'm a dickhead for speeding and why didn't I let the cop look and the secret cop handshake blah blah blah. I'm still entitled to my 4th ammend rights AND if the Trooper didn't come off like a douche I might have explained what's what but he came in hot. |

I have been stopped for speeding twice in the last few months, once in July and once last month.
Both times I had guns and ammo everywhere in the truck but neither trooper was tall enough to see over the door ledge into my Ram pickup. Its a 4X4 but with factory wheels, not raised any more then when it left the dealers lot, they were both barely over 5 feet tall. They never asked about guns, just asked if I knew why they stopped me Both times I said yes, cause I was speeding. Took my citations, they said slow down, I said thanks and stay safe out here, lots of crazy people. And this post reminds me I need to go online and donate $188 to the state. |

Its the retiree creds that kept you from being removed from your vehicle at gun point and being stuffed in the back of the cruiser.
But hey, good for you. Seriously!! |

Would you have acted differently if you didn't have your LE creds on you? ( Serious Question)

Fucking seat belt check here on my way to work today!
I opened the window and thanked the nice officers for looking out for my safety. I fucking hate NY. |

hmmm. So is a dog sniffing and pointing PC in NY? Really not up to speed on the law there and what they can do under SAFE.

You justsaid " the 4th amendment"? You said it though? The 4th amendment?

Makes me want to drive around with ammo cans full of crap. "What's in the cans?" "Just some crap, Sir" "Can I take a look?"
Or maybe glue some empty cans shut. Reminds me of the time a friend gave me a cube puzzle. He tried it first and it was way too easy, so he put a pebble in it to rattle around and glued it shut. Drove me nuts trying to figure it out. |

I ID myself so as to not get shot if some nervous cop sees my weapon...but yeah I like getting a break I'm not going to lie. |
