I have to go up. If I go down, my neck looks like someone stomped out a fire on it with golf spikes.

Downward and angled toward the middle of my neck.

Both.
My hair grows all crazy. Part under there grows to the right, another to the left, another down, a little up....so I get up/down/right/left strokes going. Same for the rest of my face...I fucking hate shaving. |

Both. Down on the first few passes, Up on the finishing passes.

Up, then sideways, then down. Still isn't a very good shave when I'm done!

[#13]
Wait a minute..........do you guys who pull down have totally shaved heads?
I can see it if your heads are totally shaved but if you have a head of hair pulling up is the ONLY way!! |

I always go against the grain, so up on the neck. I shave my head too.

Up, down, left, right......doesn't matter to my shaving needs. I gain no benefit or issue. Then again if I am in a hurry I can and have shaved with nothing more than water.......I guess I am not that sensitive!

I generally don't shave much as I prefer a beard, but when I used to it was always up
I don't even know how someone could get a clean shave going downward only. It literally left a quarter inch of stubble that was impossible to shave unless you went up. Now I just have an electric beard trimmer type thing that I use when I want my beard to look presentable for work functions and not all scraggily....... |

[#26]
I shave with the grain of my beard, not against it.
Do you shave upwards on your mustache or cheeks? |
|
[#28]
Down cause if I go up I get razor burn, but that's probably cause my face is not used to shaving.

I shave against the grain. On my face, that is the only way to get a clean shave.

First up "With the grain"!
Then down "Against it"! Extra cream if needed! Remember shave before shower prevents Any bleeding, and soothes freshly shorn skin! |

When I started shaving with a safety razor, I found a website that suggested taking a picture of my neck/face area, taping it to a mirror, and using a sharpie to draw arrows on the picture in the direction the hair grows as I felt around my face. I knew my hair grew all sorts of stupid, but I was surprised in how many twists and turns there were. After I did this, I had a visual understanding of the direction I needed to shave in each area and it really helped the learning curve of using a single straight blade as opposed to the Mach-3. With that in mind, and now having it memorized, my beard is very course, so I shave with the grain (in the direction of hair growth) over my neck and upper cheeks (I keep a short beard). I then rinse my face with warm water and re-lather and shave against.

With the grain (up, towards the chin), then against the grain.
Gave up on shaving cream/gel/soap a few years ago - now I use regular hair conditioner and it works great. |

[#37]
Why the fuck did I think this was only about the back of the neck!!??

Always against the grain, shaved that way since i started shaving.

Splash of water on the face, razor everything down, wash razor.
I never understood the need for all that cream and gel to shave your face. |
|
[#43]
With the grain on the first pass, depending on which part of my neck we're talking about.
Oh, and DE FTW. |
|
[#45]
Both. The hair at the bottom of my neck grows up. The hair at the top of my neck grows down. It starts to grow sideways (out, toward the sides) in the middle, where the two halves meet. I also have a bit of a whorl right about my larynx. I should probably just get laser treatment, and call it a day.

Go with the grain first to get the majority of it. Then go against the grain. Using this method will also make your blades stay sharp longer. |
