How does one get accidentally shot in the chest exactly?

Sad. :(  As if they don't have enough to worry about with Frein on the loose, they also have to worry about the safety training ranges.  RIP Trooper.

$1 says somebody didn't check the chamber before a drill that could've been done with blue guns.

100 bucks there is fatigue and psychological factors that came into play here with someone to go in with a hot gun.

My first thought, too.

Blue guns are cheap.  I don't understand why this keeps happening.

Because small agencies are penny wise and pound foolish
You'd think a state agency could pony up the money for blue guns, though

At police firearms training facilities I've been to, anytime there is live fire, everyone is wearing body armor.

Probably with the same carelessness a PA state trooper accidentally shoots his pregnant wife in the head while cleaning his gun.

Sure a lack of details in that article.

Training facility.  Live fire or dummies.  What check procedures?  Could non-lethal (those special modified firearms that shoot only the expensive paintballs that are loaded into the metallic cartridge) been used instead.  Details are absent.

I also wonder if it's a failure in procedure.  Some range officer isn't going to be a range officer much longer.

But if it happened on a public range everyone would be jumping on the bandwagon on stupid the shooter was or how the the guy that was shot must have walked in front of the line and it must be his fault and making classless jokes.
Sorry the trooper lost his life, but double standard anyone?

I don't think so. Maybe a few.

Obviously somebody fucked up. There are plenty of cops who are pretty unsafe and incompetent with firearms. Whoever fucked up was likely one of these people.

But, unless someone was playing Russian Roulette or something equally as stupid like pointing a glock at their leg and pull the trigger (DEA anyone?) I don't think there are many who would go so far as to make fun of them.

Tragic, I have spent a lot of time at that facility and can say that it is very well run and safety has always been paramount.  Something clearly went very wrong, can't speculate on the details until the facts are out but I would expect someone to be losing their job and facing criminal / civil penalties.  Prayers to the trooper and his family.

I think that's what one poster above was trying to get at...something to the effect of open spot because instructor/whoever would be fired for allowing this shit to happen.

The entire Dept. is in the middle of Transition training right now. We are going from our Glock 21s to Sig P227s. I don't go in today until 1400hrs so I haven't got any details yet.

It can happen. Almost happened to my academy class.  We were doing "dime drills" with dummy rounds.  Someone found a live round in the bin.  Instructors told us all to double check our mags.  One guy thought he was good(standing next to me).

Few moments later instructors were in front of us while we were doing the drills and "BOOM"!  Luckily nobody was hit.

What kind of training? Who shot him, student, role player or instructor?

ETA: Our local cops have to wear their body armor when training, even if its only with simunitions.

In the days before simunitions cops used to do scenario training with revolvers loaded with blanks. When blanks were too expensive or hard to find they used primed cases. Eye protection wasnt even considered.

or it was a rifle that penetrated his armor.

There is no rifle qual. going on right now and body armor is optional during this training. I always where mine as an instuctor but you can't tell these guys. I've always said that I'm more likely to get shot as an instuctor on the range rather than out on the road. This sounds like the FI shot the Tpr.
