The bodies of 31 hikers have been found near the top of Japan's Mount Ontake a day after a sudden volcanic eruption.

The hikers were not breathing and their hearts had stopped. The search for a total of 45 missing climbers has now been called off for the night.

The volcano, about 200km (125 miles) west of Tokyo, erupted without warning on Saturday, spewing ash and rocks.

About 250 people were trapped on the slopes of the popular beauty spot, but most got down safely.

Japan is one of the world's most seismically active nations - but there have been no fatalities from volcanic eruptions since 1991, when 43 people died at Mount Unzen in the south-west.

First deaths confirmed

Saturday's eruption forced many of those on the mountain to make emergency descents through clouds of volcanic ash and falling rocks.

"The volcanic rocks fell like hailstones," one man said.

quote "The volcano, about 200km (125 miles) west of Tokyo, erupted without warning"

isn't the fact that it is a volcano warning enough?

Yellowstone is essentially a volcano - yet it is one of the most active tourist destinations in the US.  So no - volcano does not mean much.  Hell, when I was in Costa Rica, active volcano tourism was a cool thing.  There was a town a few miles away that you could see the lava from.  Very cool at night.

Mammoth is also popular, yet that area is a chain of volcanoes, and there are more volcanoes in the larger region, IIRC.

Volcanoes look cool as hell.

Skydiving is fun, too, I'm told.

Shit, gun ownership carries a risk to it.

And driving your car carries more risk than all of those things put together and then doubled a few times.

Most things that are worth doing have some risk to them, and the risk is usually controllable and relatively low.

That doesn't mean that nobody ever dies and that accidents don't happen.  But it's better than not living at all.

I believe that the title to that video is the rough equivalent to "Run like fuck!".

A volcano will most of the time give some clues that it's about to erupt. I live about 25 miles from Mt Rainier (Enumclaw) and am moving closer (Eatonville). I ain't worried about it. 99.9% sure I won't be around for the next eruption/flow event.
