Months after staving off a trip to the boneyard, the embattled A-10 Thunderbolt II is headed to the Middle East where it could be used to fight Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria.

An Indiana Air National Guard unit that flies the Cold War-era gunships, known as Warthogs, is planning to deploy about 300 airmen and an unknown number of its aircraft to the U.S. Central Command region early next month, says a Sept. 17 news release from the unit.

Hell, we ought to make More of them!
We've had a far greater need for CAS as opposed to A2A for the last 12 years!

God forbid we ever engage Russian Tanks, but I hope one lucky pilot gets a chance to fulfill the initial role of that beautiful bastard.

I agree so very much.  I read up on this play years ago.  It is so well designed.  The engines are largely shielded from AAA by being above the wings and rear thingy (horizontal control surface).  Pilot sits in an armored tub.  Simple rugged redundant control systems. I don't know if there has ever been a better ground support aircraft.

The USAF and congress who votes on their funding can be so stupid at times. What are our threats right now and in the future? I think we are going to have more problems from Jihadis on the ground than Russian Mig's in the sky.

Anyone know where I can get some 30mm and some Mavericks?

When it comes to just getting out there and trying to locate and destroy targets of opportunity, it is hard to beat the A-10. That is largely because it lacks the sophistication of more advanced aircraft. A-10 pilots are well versed in flying down in the weeds and hunting for targets using their eyeballs. Though the upgraded C models do have more of the type of technology that would allow them to effectively attack targets from higher altitudes and at standoff distances, I imagine the A-10 community still embraces the old mindset of getting down in the mud with the grunts. That makes them perfect in the role of hunter-killer.

Modernize the bastards

Though Air Force brass are intent on retiring the plane, "no one is
saying because it’s no good,” Jennings said. "They’re saying in this day
and age … you can’t afford to have aircraft that are only good at one
thing.”

I've never understood this argument.

It's only good at one thing, but it's a thing that we keep doing and it's a thing that, apparently, no other plane does as well. There's nothing wrong with a single-mission plane if it's a mission that we keep finding ourselves doing.

I miss the old days...back when the Air Force acquired aircraft for specific needs and specific purposes. They would tell the designers what they wanted. Then the designers would proceed to build the best fighter, interceptor, bomber or attack aircraft that they could build using available technology. The results were often awesome to behold. Now combat aircraft have become so expensive that in order to field sufficient numbers, multirole has become the norm. Now we have rolled fighter, interceptor and attack all into one.

Those pictures prove A-10 is a target for air defenses. As air defences become more lethal, A-10 becomes more obsolete.

There is a Michigan Air National Guard unit that flies A-10s I believe its the 107th Fighter Sq. From Battlecreek, MI. "Cereal Killers" is stenciled on the fuselage under the canopy.

Which is why the A-10 carries, of all things, anti-tank missiles.

Lots of shit carries missiles.

If you have to take out thousands of second echelon T62s pouring through the fulda gap, nothing beats an A-10.

Faster jets don't get shot up as easily, and still have a reasonable chance of surviving hits.  Two A-10 pilots were killed in Desert Storm, and three more were captured.  This was in less than a month of fighting.  Against ISIS, those three pilots would likely have been beheaded on camera.  You fight savages like that with these things:
