Got a picture of the setup? Did the stud kind of press fit into the chamber? Did you also use a steady rest or something up near muzzle end? I've got a lathe, and a mosin, and I lust after your scout mosin. Can you hold my hand while I steal your idea? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

How did you thread the barrel? I did it in my lathe. I made a stud that held the barrel through the action. Light pressure and no slipping. I used an adjustable die to finish the threads while checking against the pre made muzzle brake. Got a picture of the setup? Did the stud kind of press fit into the chamber? Did you also use a steady rest or something up near muzzle end? I've got a lathe, and a mosin, and I lust after your scout mosin. Can you hold my hand while I steal your idea? Think red neck. I turned a piece of 0-1 just long enough to reach the end of the chamber and about .050" smaller than the bolt. I just cut a 60 taper at the end and used light pressure in the end of the chamber. I just used a live center at the other end. The action will probably not be straight so you can't trust it. That is why I used the stud. |

I need to go shoot this thing soon!
Should I knock down the shine a bit? I can give it a matte finish with maroon scotch brite. |

If it were mine, I'd send the brake off to get blackenated. How much could it cost to Ion Bond a little part like that?

Interesting how you ignored your first 100 yard group.
Somehow, I don't think it would make it through a 2MOA All Day Long challenge. |

I didn't spend weeks ringing out the accuracy of a rifle running surplus ammo and wearing a red dot sight. |

Not my thing but your workmanship looks really good. Carry on camrade-ski. |

I polished up the mating surfaces that cock the firing pin upon opening the bolt. 400 and 600 grit paper with oil and a light polish with cratex on the dremel. Much smoother to open the bolt.
I lightly chamfered the bolt face recess so the rims would slide in a bit smoother. Lightly polished the edges. I polished the extractor where it rides over the case rims. Less force to close the bolt. Any other bolt work? The sear catch was done long ago. |

My original plan was to use a shortened top handguard. My plan changed when the bedding job left a bit too much free float. It wouldn't go on. I don't have the carving experience to put the metal tips back on so it wouldn't have been as nice as yours. I bedded/FFed my barrel and I did have to thin-out the HG. It helped that it was a 91/30 HG and I had plenty of wood to work with. It was a simple task using a dremel with a sanding drum to "carve" the ends for the metal HG tip and nose cap but then again I had the cut-off ends of the stock/HG to go by. Of course more material had to be removed from the stock for the nose cap. I don't suspect it took all of 15min on each piece to do it. My problem was when the barrel bulged it shattered the front of the laminated stock to the point where I had to epoxy and pin it under the front band and forward of the nose cap crossbolt. After I thought about it for a while I epoxied in two 6/32 bolts, tightened the nuts down till the epoxy dried and then cut both ends of the bolts off with a cut-off wheel. It made for a very solid and unnoticeable repair. The front sling hanger hole is a roll-pin that was epoxied in. Laminate stocks don't so much split as they shatter. That's why Ivan used a wrist crossbolt on their laminate stocks. |
