Guess the airforce had to finally justify the F-22.  

It's a poor assumption to think that Syrian airspace is a permissive environment for US air assets.

I don't think Assad will fire on our planes. He and his butt buddy Putin both said they would consider it an act of aggression if we conducted airstrikes in Syria but in all reality he knows we are helping save his ass from ISIS so his bluster is just showmanship to the world. He knows if he did fire on us he would most likely lose a lot of assets. His airforce is also most likely grounded now. Weaking ISIS will also allow him to concentrate more of his ground forces in the fight against the FSA. Now whatever capability ISIS has as far as captured air defense capability is another story. I would have to think all the different elements of the Free Syrian Army are cheering this air campaign on also. Let us cripple ISIS, let the dust settle then let the fight between the FSA and Syrian army begin again. We are going to spend a couple billion $ blowing up ISIS shit and with 2 other sides left fighting each other it wont do a thing to bring peace to the place. All it will do is possibly weaken ISIS enough to remove them temporarily from the 3 way clusterfuck. Then like a roach they will scurry into hiding only to reappear in another place at another time.
