There's no doubt Alaska is an amazing place and few places on Earth can compare, but there's no way in hell I could make it through an Alaskan Fall, never mind an Alaskan Winter. Which is why I chose the next best place, with much milder winters... Idaho.

I took my wife on the " Inside Passage" cruise for our 20th. Float planed it out of Juneau for Salmon on the fly.
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on earth I have ever been. Was offered 3 jobs while there. If I only had the balls to accept and leave this Godforesaken state of NY........ |

Great pics. Will go there when my daughter is old enough to enjoy going.
Surprised there wasn't a cameraman in the one of the pictures from the 50 tv shows about Alaska. |

Lived at Elmendorf for 3 years. Alaska was the best place that I have lived. I lived Denali. Great times up there. Been wanting to go back.

Yes, we process all our own meat..weather steaks, burger, sausage, jerky..only thing we haven't done lately is pepperoni sticks and thats because we just can't get the spices right as a local shop does.. processing game meat right is a lot of work..we will age 1/4's for up to 30 days if its getting cut for steak....We did 4 caribou and 3 moose in 3 weeks this year(not counting the 4 quarters set aside to age for steaks)... |

It's all in picking the right clothes..no cotton, ever...I once fell thru the ice to my armpits about 25 miles from the cabin(which is 50 miles from the road)..it was -40 out..got out of the water, on the sled and headed for the cabin..when we got there the boys had to carry me inside because my clothes were frozen solid..believe it or not while I was cool, I wasn't frozen..(inside layers stayed pretty dry....just outer layer soaked).....and all this from a guy who grew up in the desert and hates being cold...heck I have spent all day out on a sled in -40 to -65 below many times..its not bad.... |

Very nice OP thanks.
One day I would like to visit, I'll keep dreaming for now. |

Been there 6 times for work and one time for vacation. We are going back for vacation next year.

I would love to go to Alaska. Hopefully I will be able to when I retire.

Of course all it took was me posting these photos and I immediately received an email from my branch manager indicating I need to be thinking about the next manning/movement cycle. I need a hail Marry option from the Army personnel folks. FML.....

OP
I hate you. Those are some beautiful pictures. Kudos for getting out into the wild. |

Awesome. Seeing the northern lights is on my bucket list. What is the best way/time/place to have a chance? View Quote They can be seen around mid-September. This is when it finally gets dark enough at night for the lights to be seen. They typically come out late in the evening, around midnightish, but can be seen earlier if the conditions are right. Generally the farther north you go, the better your chances are of seeing them, but this also depends on conditions; getting away from light sources helps as well. |
