I'm jumping into the USPSA world tomorrow morning bright and early. I've never done any organized shooting events before, so this will be a learning experience. Does GD have any nuggets of wisdom to a new guy?

ORSA?

Edit:  yep, I was there too. Squad 3 I believe.  Hope you had a good time and that you come back.

Yup, I was in Squad 1 with the other new guy (that 7' asian with hair down to his back).

I'll be back next month for the club match and the T4T match as well.

Sounds good. I'll have a friend with me next month as well.

My first uspsa match (in the pouring rain) had two texas stars at 27yards and poppers on my first stage.

I got em all, but it took a few mags.

I am not very familiar with USPSA rules but the two are very similar with some minor differences.

Paper targets are different- no "B" or head zone in IPSC.

Ten rd mags only for all divisions in Canada.

Divisions are Production, Open, Classic (1911 single stacks), Revolver, Standard (STI, Infinity type guns)

Maximum barrel length for Production is 127mm so G34/35 not legal for Production.

Power factors are the same as USPSA I believe.

I am sure there are some other minor but that is all I can think of off the top of my head.

Shot a match today. Did okay. 4th production behind GM, M, A.  Top B.

Nothing crazy, just steady performance, with no major screw ups.

67% on classifier.

Sitting at 71.xx %  for a while.

Yes, in production first shot must be double action with a minimum trigger 5lb pull.

Level 5 World IPSC Shoot starts Oct 2 in Frostproof Florida. I think there are over 2000 competitors from all over the world. I probably could have gone as an R.O. but it required 16 days of my time. Too hot in Fla for me and I would rather compete than work.

Kinda depends on where you start. Starting at d or c, I think would be super easy.

Starting at b, a little harder

A, even harder etc.

I started at  low b this spring and started naturally increasing .

Then when you really want to move up... you start getting in your own head during the classifier. You flub reloads, clip a no shoot.  Stuff you usually dont do.

You just gotta practice and try not to try so hard.

It looks so easy when I watch other videos. I think a better trigger might help me a lot, but then again I'm not sure if I want to change the trigger on a carry gun.

I kicked ass on this one. 29 alpha 3 charlie in 20.54.  The only guys to beat me in the combined results were an Open GM (five seconds faster) and Limited Master (3 seconds faster).  Their points were one or two less than mine.

If you're hanging tough (time-wise) with good open and limited division shooters then you're doing right.

Typically they're reloading only once (or not at all, depending on round counts) while we production guys are reloading 2, 3, even 4 times in a stage.

I think that comparison makes for good results analysis.

My first match I cleared the star with only one miss. Felt like a real badass

Second match I was all cocky going up to the star, and took about 20 rounds to clear it Learned a lesson that day.

Watching some of those videos, you guys are still a lot better than I am. I'm way down in D class still. Did pretty decently this past weekend, except on the classifier. I hit the no-shoot four times to zero out my score on the stage.

Impressive. I would think a trigger would be one of the first things to get changed on a competition gun--unless that's a no-go in Produciton?

You can put in a Apex DCAEK kit or butcher your sear using the Burwell method.

You cannot put in a trigger like a Apex trigger, because per the Production rules-

INTERNAL parts: This clause is NOW interpreted to mean that a broad range of INTERNAL parts may be modified or replaced – either with OFM or aftermarket parts.
Special Notes/Clarifications:
• Strikers, sears, springs, connectors/disconnectors, and any other part which is NOT visible when the gun is in battery is considered an INTERNAL part and may be modified or replaced unless otherwise prohibited in these provisions (see section 22 for specific prohibitions).

So as long as it's not visible when the gun is in battery, it's GTG.

I did not. I just showed up and shot, and I asked questions as we went. I got there about an hour early and one of the guys walked me through a few stages to show the basics of how everything operates and all the safety rules and what not, but I don't know the nitty gritty details/rules.
