came across a stevens bolt action .22, it appears to be a model 34, real old or thrown down the driveway ...alot, broke extractor, felt very loose in the stock,  and it appears that the dumbass who owned it painted it brown with house paint, for 60 bucks ?

it also appeared to have no serial number. that was the one thing that made me real hesitant to buy it. but i thought it would be a good project gun that would kill a few weekends in self taught gunsmithing.

What can go wrong?

Does the muzzele look like a oilfilter was screwed on?

I bought a Marlin Model 99G for $75 bucks from Nagel's Gun Shop in San Antonio that did not have a serial number on it.  I would not hesitate to buy an older rifle that did not have a serial number if its through an FFL.

Not having a serial number does not matter at all. All the other things you listed would make me not want to buy it. Not for $60, anyways.

Not required until the GCA of 1968. I wouldn't waste 60 bucks on the rifle you describe.

Very common with older longarms. I have a few shotguns with no serials. Not much beats a $20 single-shot or a $35 Sears pump! (My $20 Win1897 has a serial, heh.)

Offer $25, buy it for $30. Cheap, fun project. Before 1968 rifles didn't require a serial number. So that will give you an idea on age.

Buy it. Fix it.

Yes, offer less than $30 though.

before 1968.

I bought a few just for that reason.

Buy it bring it back to the glory it had when it was first made.

I had a Win. model 69 that had no serial number, great little .22.

I still have a Win. model 36A, 410 with no serial number, with the amount of rabbits it's killed, it could be qualified as a instrument of genocide

as stated, OP must not be pre-68.  Hell's Bells, I'm not pre-68 and I knew that.

Had several stevens "springfield" 187's with no serial.

We're they REQUIRED or simply placed for record keeping purposes?

Honestly, that gun sounds so fucked up that I wouldn't let them give it to me! Trust me, OP, you have better things to do with your spare time, like reading up on gun laws or well... anything else then trying to turn a piece of painted crap into a polished turd.

I picked up a remington TM rifle at a dealer for $60 it was encased in rust and had a leaded up barrel.  restored it to a better state and browned the barrel, did some stock repair and refinished it, it was a worthwhile buy. It didnt have numbers either, and the dealer was fine with it, why wouldnt a buyer be.
