I've narrowed it down to a Smith 642. Our LGS got in a couple today. One is a basic 642, but it is a no lock, which I like. It is $419 out the door. The other is a Performance Center Talo 642 Enhanced Action. The trigger is WAY better, and the cylinder is MUCH smoother on this one. But it has the lock. It is $469 out the door. And I'm not buying both What says the hive?

Or sit in front of the TV and kill bad guys with it and just pull the crap out of it with snap caps until it works it self out.

I will also say for $50 this is a hard thing to pass up.

My M&P 340 with a lock has given me no problems.

It took me twenty minutes. Half of that was spent crawling around looking for the one I launched.

This is your answer.  Then click on this link  FWIW I have the Apex trigger in two J frames including an older 642 and it's excellent but for only a few bucks more I'd have gone the Performance Center route and a hole plug if if it had been available.

ETA- those grips are really cool but you'll probably want to switch to rubber grips if you plan to shoot it a lot.  I love large caliber handguns but with +P rounds those airweights are not fun to shoot.

Actually they are still making 642s and 442s with no lock

No lock and the Apex Spring Kit. Best $25 you can spend on a J-frame. (Edit: if you're going to do the install yourself, get the special tool. Trust me.)

Personally I'd go with a Sig P938, in fact that's what I did after having my J-Frame for a while. I bought it for the wife who never liked it and honestly I can understand why as it's a bitch to shoot well. Mine was a lock model but I never had a problem, a quick 15 min fix will take care of it once and for all. I would get a trigger kit though.

Same here , and I've installed the Apex kit in 3 of my customers guns, they all agree with this answer.

I snatched the lock out and put The Plug in the hole and never had a lick of difficulty in a 340PD.

Of course, it looks like shit to have that hole there at all, but for practical purposes I don't see its removal and Plugging a big deal.

I hate the lock all the way.  That said, I have two that aren't available without a lock--a .500 mag and a 617 10-shot.  They haven't fucked up.
