I read they have variable counterweight but I am thinking one extra little reach and tipsy turvey

I don't think you understand the engineering that goes into the weight loading/distribution on these. Yes, you can tip one if you don't have the correct counterweights on the back, but they give you a sticker with a weight table for that.

Some common sense helps too.

I know they must work or they wouldn't make such a product ..
just sometimes you grab a little more than you thought or material density changes greatly.

if you know how they work I would love more details

Other than flipping one off the side of a cliff, you're not gonna tip one. They'll only tip towards their boom and until the boom hits the ground.

The cable that retracts the boom looks like it really hinders the usefulness of those machines.

Somehow I get the feeling they're used more for dragline-type operations than digging a hole.

As a Mechanical Engineer, I see no issue with these as long as they are properly operated.

You are correct sir. Their main function is ditch, lake, pond clean up, not digging virgin ground.

I don't see any issues. The guy in pic 1 is holding a string that's tied on to the back of the excavator. How's it going to tip with him holding it You sleep through 2nd grade ?

This.  Notice the track hoe in the hole on the first picture.  Hoe 1 breaks up dirt, huge boom hoe pulls dirt out.

I've been the construction business my entire life and I've never seen an excavator like that.  I have sold lots of these though.

It's all in the operator. Just don't extend with a overweight bucketload and the boom up high.

Now the pic of the excavator on the cliff, sideways? Only if it's remote control, and someone else's machine.

Pucker factor is standing on the apex (highest point in the middle) while 2 legs are on shore and 2 are still on the ship... While unloading the new cranes from the ship.. I was on all of these as a rigger during the moves.
Though that was in calm port waters.. Those things came across the pacific just as you see them..

Those ones could be.. Not my pic but they look like some of the ones we got at LA / Long Beach, Ca.. We got at ton of new ZPMCs in the last 10 years.

These are the the ones I rigged.. Along with a few others deliveries.

Then after you get them in shore, you have to test them.. Nobody wants to be the guy to test the stop switches at the end of the boom with max load...
The drivers cab is at 140' above ground under the boom.. You pick up a max load which can be is 1.5x max working load of 120 tons and trolly at full speed, about 20 mph, out to the boom tip and don't let up on the controls..

There is supposed to be a slow down switch and then a stop switch to make sure you don't bounce off the hard stops.. But they usually come adjusted correctly..

WHAM!! Followed by a 8-10' lean forward and what is certain to be 2,000 tons of crane crashing on top of you in the water after a fall of 180'... (Over the water there is another 40' of drop...)

Fuck that shit.. Not fun..

Here you go

Cheap, work pretty darn well around heavy things and if you have to wear coveralls, can't even tell they are there.
