We have 2 shih tzus and 1 bichon frise.

At $40 plus per dog for a full hair cut every 6-8 weeks is getting old.

I'm thinking it can't be that hard since I used to dress cattle for show when I was in college.

Thing is, there are so many trimmers out there, its hard to decide.

Is a dog that hard to give a haircut to?

Suggestions?

I groom my papillon/poodle mix. As far as clippers, talk to groomers in your area and see where you can buy a refurbished pair of clippers.

I've dated 2 groomers, and they rarely buy clippers new. They always buy them refurbed. Clippers wear out, and need to be fixed up. If you're just grooming your personal dogs, and not doing it for the money, a refurbed pair of clippers should outlast the life of your dog, might have to go in for basic maintenance (blade sharpening, etc).

As far as dogs that are easy to groom, short answer, it depends on the dog. There is no breed standard guaranteeing a dog that will be easy to groom. Talk to the groomers you've used in the past and ask how your dogs behave during the grooming process.

ETA: Feel free to IM me if this thread doesn't get active. I met the crazy in those groomers because I worked in a grooming salon. I did learn a lot from working there though, so if your questions aren't all met, I might be able to add more insight.

Yep.  Sheep dog here.

Go to Amazon.  Order the "andis" clipper that fits your needs and budget.  Save money FTW!

The other part of this is your dog(s).  How will they sit, behave, tolerate, where will you groom them, etc.

For me, it is usually 2 :30 sessions outside (for easy clean up).

Good luck.

I used to, but I hated the way the fur stuck to my tongue.

We groom both of our critters at home.
Been doing it for years.
Like the man said, look for re-furbed clippers,
and then know a good sharpener for them.

Are you concerned with how they 'look'? Or are you more of a clean and healthy/practical owner?

Shave em down in the summer, get the shit out of there face and eyes.

Trim between toes in winter and brush them regularly.

I used to professionally groom dogs. I prefer the Andis clippers. Extremely durable and not ridiculously expensive.

If you can't find a refurbished set, look at www.petedge.com

Also, make sure your dog is clean, dry, and brushed out BEFORE you start clipping. And invest in a good set of straight shears and thinking shears.

Is there a difference between clippers and trimmers, they list both?

Clippers usually have interchangeable blades and are for large areas. Trimmers are usually smaller, with a blade that trims very close to the skin. They're usually used for detail areas like the face, feet, inside of the ears, and around the dog's backside.

Used to do it as a job, now I groom our schnauzer.  It's not rocket science, but don't try to do it with cheap clippers.  I use Later A5's, some people like the Andis.
