About 100 citizens, community leaders and local and state elected leaders attended the bill signing that came 19 years after the King County Council voted to rename the county to honor civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The county was originally named in 1852 for William Rufus King, Vice President for President Franklin Pierce. Since the state charters all counties, state law had to be changed to make the renaming official. State Senator Adam Kline sponsored state legislation eight consecutive years before the legislature this year voted to authorize the name change. State Representative Eric Pettigrew sponsored the bill in the State House of Representatives...... (CONT).... Godsdammit.

I have a better idea. Make everything equal and fair across the board. Ban holidays. Since everyone seems to be offended by this or that or something-or-other, just ban them. All of them. Equal opportunity bannination. Besides - why should government workers get days off the public does not? That's not fair! And while we're at it, the Seattle government probably has a sweet pay-scale, benefits and perks that John Q doesn't get. Plus, those are public service positions. People serving in those positions should realize they are there to serve their constituents - not to become semi-celebrities and get rich. In the interest of fairness and equality, they must be paid minimum wage, and receive the same benefits they claim McBurgerShack and Sprawlmart should be providing to their employees. And shift to a 7-day a week, 24-hour schedule, rotating shifts. Why should some workers get Saturdays and/ or Sundays off and others have to work? Why do some people get to work days, and others have to work nights? That's not fair! No more days off. Everything is open all the time. And get rid of FLSA. Why should some people get overtime without a bunch of extra rules? That's not fair! Everyone works hourly or everyone works salary, and everyone plays by the same rules. And on the subject of wages, why does the supervisor get paid more than the worker? I mean all he does is sit in the office and make phone calls and spend time on the computer while we're out here busting our asses. And don't get me started on managers, with their big cars and fancy suits and shit - they wouldn't have any of that if it wasn't for us workers. That's not fair! All profit should go to the government so they can give everyone just enough money for the few things we need, and provide everything else for everyone. And make the school year an actual year. Why the hell should kids have months to screw off while most of society has to keep working? That's not fair! They should be in school getting some book-learin', or in a trade school learning a trade. No more summers off for the little slackers. And all of these nice houses and expensive apartments? What the hell? That's not even close to being fair! Tear all of that shit down and build more sensible community housing based around work centers. Then we can all have the same kind of place, use public transportation so we are free from the expense of having to own a vehicle and reduce carbon emissions, eat in neighborhood cafeterias, use the neighborhoods clinics, and go the the neighborhood theaters and parks and pool. And nationalize all of the media. No - seriously. Some of that stuff is scary! We should have official government programming to make sure we get the truth! And patriotic and wholesome programming - educational and uplifting! Would you like to know more? I have many ideas courtesy of discussions with communist/ marxist/ socialist/ progressive lugnuts over the years, as they have described how to achieve their lovely little progressive paradises. |

I'm only 30, grew up in the Seattle area (Kitsap co.) and in my short time this place has changed significantly. Early/mid 90s tech boom brought a huge influx of out of staters, especially from the SF Bay Area, and it has just never stopped. The influx of Asian and Indian immigrants to the WA tech sector also seem to support just about all of these stupid laws/policies as well.
Everybody is always fucking offended by something and looking for ways to make everything in this state "fair." It just will never happen. Meanwhile, endless pet projects and political cronyism bankrupt and corrupt the state. They're ruining the state in the process, but who cares? Progress onward! It's to the point where my wife and I would really like to leave. We would go to eastern WA, where a lot of my family roots are, and where I spent a lot of time as a kid, but these laws will only follow us as King/Pierce/Snohomish county run the entire state. My wife's mother and step father moved to Montana this year, and if the employment was there for me at this time (I work in the marine business), we would already be heading on over. I remember in the early 90s, my friends and I used to walk around the neighborhood with my BB gun en route to whatever patch of woods we were going to go mess around in. Today the SWAT team would show up. |

Columbus Day is not really about Christopher Columbus. It's really an official holiday for Italian-Americans. St. Paddy's Day is not really about St. Patrick, but is an (unofficial) holiday for Irish-Americans. Likewise, Martin Luther King's birthday is not about Martin Luther King, but is really a holiday for African-Americans. Let's get to the crux of all this stuff.
