Forestry spraying. This gem is 13 fooking acres. About 5 minutes worth of work.

We can fill it with 100 gallons of payload and 45 gallons of fuel in about 2.5 minutes. A lot less time than this bird

What are the wind limits for this operation? Is is based on the spray?

yes; the next morning.  We had 8-10 mph winds until about 5 minutes before dark and pilot had already cracked a beer.  Done by 0645 the next morning and on to their next job.

You haven't lived until you've sat by a helo for 10 hours on a gorgeous day waiting for the wind to die.

The first rule of chemtrails is you don't talk about chemtrails.  The second rule of chemtrails is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT CHEMTRAILS.

You guys do any work in SC?  A setup just like that was spraying near my house the first part of June.  I spoke with the guys out there.  Wondering if it could have been you.

Very likely.  Crew is out of Kingstree County.  As far as I know they're the only ones flying Hillers on a regular basis in SC.

They've got 5 of those, IIRC, all in some type of red livery.

Edit, Haddock Flying Service.

Timber company that owns our deer lease had a similar helicopter, but they dropped fire from it to start controlled burns.  Much cooler than your chemicals. Sorry.

They used a Hughes 500D (now known as MD500) in Magnum PI.

Where did you find the antique Hiller.

Flew those in Army flight school in '69 and they were old then!

It ain't an antique if they're flying every day!  They have 5 of them, I think, all converted to turbine (Hillers came with piston engines).  It's a hella spray bird; good power, good visibility, relatively low operating cost, durable, strong airframe.

I'm actually a forester; not technically part of the air crew.  This particular contract requires a forester to be on-site when spraying, and that's me.  My job is to take care of all the organizing and paperwork and make sure the right stuff gets sprayed on the right tract.

They tell me it's about 1500 pounds empty.  Figure 800 lbs for payload, 350 pounds fuel, and 200 for pilot and gear.  Max payload is probably close to 1100.

Placard says 420 shp, but for some reason I've always had it in my head it was 750.  I'll assume placard is correct

Looks like a way to have a hell of a lot of fun.

Never did the whole helo thing. Something about not having any wings and still flying never sat right with me.

Still......

I know how you feel. It has been a real shit year for aerial spraying. The company this year brought an old Hiller and a Long Ranger. I love flying and flown in many different aircrafts but there is no way you could get me up in a Hiller. About halfway through our operation the controls f'ed up in their Hiller mid-flight. The pilot was stuck about 500ft up doing donuts circling for ~30 minutes. Dumped the entire payload off target near a road and on some big timber. Thought he was going to have to crash it but when he got near the ground he managed to get it lined out and put it down safe. Pilot said he was done flying after that.

Reminds me of the time I was up and the pilot asked me, "Do you smell something burning?" I said that I could smell something but we were flying over a trash dump so I figured that's what it was. Several miles later he asked again but this time, "Do you smell something electrical burning?" I said I did. He didn't even acknowledge what I said and kept on trucking.
