Hate it or love it, you know the OPs song.  Imho, it is the rock song by which all others are judged.  I may be following the pack, but i can tell you where I was when I first heard WLL. incredible song and whenever it is on, the radio goes to 11.  Lot of great songs mentioned in this thread, but when I die, WLL is one of the 5 songs I want played at the funeral.

you will not find a heavier rock song, trust me

thanks for the thread, OP.

I always dug the tone on the intro. I always thought it was a part throttle wah; turns out it was out of phase mics.

I heard that BBC poll on the radio the other day, and I agreed with most of it.

My favorite guitar riffs of all time are:

Layla (Intro), Eric Clapton.
Smoke On The Water (Intro), Deep Purple.
Whole Lotta Love (Intro), Zep.
American Woman (Intro), BTO.
Locomotive Breath (@ 1:20 and thereafter), Jethro Tull.

...not necessarily in that order.

Those are just a few off the top of my head that I consider "classic."

ETA: Oh, and yes, Mark Knopfler deserves to be on this list somewhere too.

My favorites:

Blue Sky - Allman Brothers Band (live version)
Money for Nothing - Dire Straits
Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry

Greatest of all time?
Come on Baby (let the Good Times Roll) - Jimi Hendrix

Of course, any mention of great guitar work needs to have Chuck Berry in it as well.

that reminds me of another from 'guitar hero": 'stricken' is just a fat, nasty riff.
