Slash's solo in Sweet Child of Mine, or the solo in Skynrd's Call Me the Breeze.

Throw a few out here:
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing, Sultans of Swing Heart - crazy on you (opening) Outlaws - green grass and high tides Marshall Tucker - fire on a mountain |

Solid nominations.
Sweet Child O Mine is my ringtone for my wife, so...gotta go with that. |

Jeeze people - solo's are not riffs. They may incorporate riff's, but are intended to be singular. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Yeah, David Gilmour's solo's in Comfortably Numb would have to be up there somewhere as well. Jeeze people - solo's are not riffs. They may incorporate riff's, but are intended to be singular. True. I retract my "solo" statement for both Sweet Child O' Mine and Call Me The Breeze, and vote for the riffs in both instead. Better now? (I still like the damn solos, though ) |

Too many good ones to choose from. Am I really the first one to mention Iron Man? Great riff. How about Holy Diver by Dio?
One of the most recognizable: House of the Rising Sun as performed by The Animals. A less well known one, but which also burrs itself into your brain: I Want You/She's So Heavy by The Beatles. |

If we wanted to expand this to bass riffs, I might have to post Roundabout by Yes!

I remember they had a list for best opening riff. Like Layla and Wake up Little Susie and Smoke on the Water.

So many great ones, but I think Nugent's "Stranglehold" tops all. The guitar riff on top of the stalking drums creates a mood matched by damn few songs ever.

When my son took up bass guitar I played him that song as an example of what he should aspire to. Shortly thereafter he switched to guitar. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I disagree with "Whole Lotta Love" which won the BBC poll. It's good but not that good. Link: http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-28929167 Discuss. View Quote "Stairway to Purgatory" It is so rad I can only listen to half of it. |

Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. I offer this for your viewing pleasure. Or G.F. Handel's Sarabende. |

A lot of really good ones already mentioned. I'll throw in Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam.
ETA: After checking I may not understand exactly what a riff is so the above may be an incorrect entry. |

It would seem this category would need to be divided between technical ability and just straight up bad ass.
