We are told that both of the victims were transported to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. They both went to the Nebraska Medical Center.
Shortly before midnight Chief Deputy Dave Baker confirmed that the suspect in the robbery had died. He did not have a condition update on the COPS employee. Link Hope he pulls through. RIP to a fellow audio guy.
I used to work audio for the old show Real Stories of the Highway Patrol. Most of the time it was pretty quiet, but we occasionaly got into some tight situations. Once we chased down a stolen car. When the perps finally pulled over, we got out of the trooper car and started shooting video. I noticed behind us a lot more troopers had arrived and we were in their line of fire. I don't know what would have happened if the incident turned violent. We always wore an armored vest. I can't recall what legal papers we signed to be on the production crew. |

Wow, these cops are major league retarded.
'Cops' crew member was killed by Omaha police during filming A crew member for the TV show "Cops" died after he was shot by police while filming Omaha officers responding to an armed robbery Tuesday night, officials said Wednesday. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said 38-year-old Bryce Dion was shot once during a shootout between three officers and a robber in a Wendy's restaurant. Too bad the shitstain couldn't have gotten his Darwin award alone. Omaha.com article says he "shot" at police with his airsoft gun. One competent person carrying could have ended this a little differently.

Bryce was an awesome fucking guy. He rode with me for 10 weeks about 3 years ago. He was am extremely humble, professional, kind hearted individual that would have given you the shirt off his back. We all became friends and hung out outside of work. Such a sad deal all around and his death is extremely sad. Such a good guy to lose all too soon.

When the COPS crew was out at my station I got the chance to meet a lot of them and they were a really good group of guys. Hope he pulls through ETA: All of the crew had vests on when they were with us, lots of lights and camera equipment. Those guys are fearless though, with just a vest on and carrying all their filming gear they could move and stick right with you. Pretty impressive to watch. View Quote Bryce was badass. He was a sound guy and I'll never forget a call the entire world would have seen had It ended in arrest. Bryce took his long boom mic and had it in front of this toothless hillbilly who promptly stated "get that big hairy dick out of my face"!!!!!! He then proceeded with a big toothless smile and let out a huge burp, all on camera. The longer the call went on the funnier it got. Bryce was there to catch all of it. It was an art how they worked in unison, camera and sound, all while not interfering with us doing the police stuff. RIP BRYCE :-( |

My oldest kids are 21 and 22, I can remember watching this when they were like 4 5 0r 6. The song Bad boys Bad Boys came on when it started and they would tear down the hallway and get in front of the TV and start dancing. Good times, good times!
My youngest is home now. Going to youtube the theme soong and see what happens?! 3rd edit. Didn't work. Wife said , why you gotta play that so loud all the time. Turn it down before you wake him(6 yo) up. |

Robber was a father of 6 kids, turning his life around. Sister-in-law interviewed, blamed cops and their guns for robber's death. The city's contract with the TV show "Cops" appears shields the City of Omaha from liability in the crew member's death. Just a terrible story, but I love living in Omaha. |

Minimal training, lackluster supervision, relatively low standards, and lack of bad outcomes as justification for objectively fucked up practices often leads to people getting hurt once shit gets real. Then, of course, there are just shit situations where it's impossible to win. |

Sad story, I can certainly recall a few episodes of them crew helping out when things went from 0-full retard on a lone cop.
Certainly appreciated the show for doing a good job of portraying how most cops (ignoring what highlighted stuff gets pushed by the mainstream) are good people trying to take care of their community and how quickly their job can go from well 0 to full retard. Read that he was wearing a vest and the round entered under his arm in a gap of the vest. I've seen BB, airsoft, and air gun all reported, I will say I have a KWA M9 PTP (legit training quality gas blowback airsoft pistol) and indoors it is loud (loud enough I wear eye and ears just like shooting a normal gun, except I'm in my spare bedroom). Without knowing the circumstances of the shoot, and after googling "shotgun mic" it seems pretty reasonable that another unit responding could see that and have identified it as a threat (don't know if they wear outer vests like press in war zones that would have helped ID him.) Definitely more of a possibilty of that than a guy with a boom mic mis-id'd. I see this as being a little more likely than a cop not being aware of the second part of rule 4 (the behind your target bit). |

The weapon the robber had certainly looked real enough. However, according to the news reports, the robber fired the Airsoft gun at the cops two times, which is why they opened fire.
As an Airsoft gun sounds nothing like a real gun, shouldn't they have realized it was not a firearm once he fired the gun at them?
