Evening folks,

Would it be wiser to roll my own rifle, so to speak, or is there a better opportunity available through a manufacturer.

I have a medium-ish amount to spend, so no Larue OBR etc etc, but not a piece of junk either.

Would need to take Magpul mags also.

Thanks in advance,

Dram

Palmetto just started selling DPMS pattern lowers for $160, seems like a good start.

Right now I would look into the DPMS G2 series of rifles. They have a few different models and look well built.

I was looking at the DPMS rifles, and while they look quite fine, in their industry forum here on Arfcom they have a few folks that are experiencing issues with reliability.

Having to totally soak your rifle with a ton of lube doesn't seem to equate to a reliable piece of equipment.

Anyone with some actual experience with a mid price 308 AR ?

thanks again,

Dram

Love my Colt 901, it's been absolutely reliable and very accurate.

Look at CMMG, they are DPMS pattern lowers, DPMS high pattern uppers, reasonable cost, put a good barrel on it in the length you want and make a great rifle. I have put together 2 with different barrels, handguards, and stocks. Plenty of options out there for all the bells and whistles.

Had the PSA offerings been available at the time, I would have considered those, but I have never seen the PSA stuff firsthand.

I put my own together on a Mega ambi set of receivers. So I vote build your own, or if you could swing it, grab an LMT.

Armalite match upper on Aero Precision lower is my favorite rifle. VERY smooth and comfortable to shoot.

I don't know anything about AR10 style rifles, is that gas system really long? Or do they all run longer than AR15's? What's the barrel length and manufacturer on that?

Building on a Mega receiver is probably the way to go. I've never had an experience with the PSA and CMMG is just too hit or miss for me.

It's a Krieger barrel cut down to 16" with a rifle length gas system. It's run everything I've put through it (around 600 rounds) without any problems.

Excellent replies and pics guys, thanks again.

Can you tell me the source for the dimpled Krieger barrel and railed forend?

Thanks again!

Go ahead and upgrade caliber to 6.5 Creedmoor while you're at it.

Stoner, Armalite or Colt, The only .308 AR's I would consider!
The first 2 have been building .308 AR's for a long time & Colt's always seem to work!

You couldn't build close to this with another $750, unless you went AR-10B series... which is better because of the REAL mags.

I have an M&P10 because I got a killer deal on it.

In hindsight - I would build over get another M&P10. While its been a great gun... The proprietary parts kill it. I get 308 ARs are all different but it seems like the KAC/DPMS parts are becoming the standard slowly.

With what I have wrapped up in the gun now I would of went for a DPMS GenII SASS or build off your favorite brand reciever.

I would go with the DPMS G2.  I have the LR 308 classic and although it's heavy I have not had a problem with it.  Eats everything I feed it and good accuracy.

I bought a CMMG that has a billet lower and upper. I could not come close to building it for what it costs.
I haven't beat it enough to know that it can take it but under light use it seems perfect.

Armalite AR 10A
I believe I paid between 1300-1400 new a couple of years ago.
Accurate, reliable, more mag options, not at all ammo picky.
I doubt I could build the same quality rifle any cheaper.

That being said my next build is going to be a 7.62 AR
