When I grew up we has those 1/4 to 1/2" sharp granite rocks in the back yard. Played out there in 115* weather, running across those rocks. Hell, we'd play out front on the street barefoot in the summer! If our feet got a bit too hot we'd go hangout on the neighbors lawn for a bit 
Nails... they will go through More than once growing up grandpa would have to get the pliers out and remove one.
