So when Qui-Gon and Obi-Won arrive on the Trader ship, in the first movie, R2D2 is with them. We see where and how C3P0 come from in the course of the movie but where did R2D2 come from? He seems to have been around and in the service of the Jedi for a long time when the movie starts.

Reel 2 - Deck 2.
A person swapping the tape referred to it as R2, D2, George liked it and ran with it.

The droids were inspired by two characters in a Kurwasawa movie. Title escapes me though.

|
The queen/R2D2 "what is his number" scene in phantom menace is the biggest groaner of the whole prequels.

R2 units are standard issue astromech droids used on the Xwing fighter
How Anakin got one before the x wing was avail is a good question. I'm not sure if they were used on the headhunters in the books or not. |
|
Thanks to an r5 unit with a bad motivator r2 was able to help the alliance

Here. Everything you ever wanted to know about him.

It was pretty clear in Episode 1- watch it again.
R2-D2 is just one of several Astromech service droids aboard the Queens Starship that repaired damage to the ships shields during their escape. Several droids get blown away "Were losing droids fast!" but R2-D2 is the lone survivor and makes the repairs allowing the Queen's ship to slip past the blockade and escape into Hyperspace. Due to the damaged Hyperdrive core they can't go far and wind up on Tatooine. R2 conducts a severe case of PTSD, leading to life-long erratic behavior including droid Tourette Syndrome and abusive long-term relationship with his "life partner" C3-P0. |

I thought they rounded up R2D2 from the ship they escaped on.

when 2 droids love each other they sometimes decide they want a little droid in their life

Just a particularly tough little robot that was clever enough to evade his periodic memory wipes, and developed more of a personality than he should have.
Man, I haven't read a Star Wars novel in forver. For the best, I suppose |

R2D2: Murderbot I don't know if the "special edition" Star Wars kept the scene where R2 sabotaged R5 or not. I haven't watched the fucked up version since I got the original on lazerdisk. |

I saw the Special Edition the night it came out because hey it was Star Wars in the theater again, but honestly if there was a scene like that I don't remember it. I still have my original un-Special VHS and DVDs so I'm all good there. Incidentally... http://www.blastr.com/2014-8-18/rumor-day-disney-release-original-cuts-star-wars-trilogy-blu-ray ...which would make me very happy. |

It mentions R5 being sabotaged by R2 here

I'm glad Disney is re-releasing the originals, uncut, unedited on blueray. hurry it up!

Well, the most impressive thing about R2 is that he was the means by which the entire saga was recorded and so became the story "a lone time ago...."
He's in every movie and is involved in all the heaviest action. The movie is really about R2D2... |
|
R2D2 was not with the Jedi....he was a droid assigned to the Queen's starship...so as of his first appearance he was property of the Royal House of Naboo.
....and my nerd is showing again |
|
The real question is why can't he speak? He has a mobile cutting wheel, a flamethrower and can fly, but he still has to communicate through beeps and boops. |
|
Those are pretend fake movies. R2D2 is just some random droid with no backstory Leia grabbed in Star Wars.

he has always existed in one form or another,he is the way and the light
|
|
View Quote Keep in mind R2D2 can also fly, shoot fire, and burns other droids to death (and we know they feel pain because Jabba tortures droids). He's really quite the versatile murderer. |
|
The radio dramas have a scene where Leia is giving R2 the plans and tells him they have to be delivered to Obi-Wan Kenobi at all costs. She also turns off his self preservation program.
In the radio version of the Jawa scene 3PO tells R2 to get in line stop modifying that other unit. So R2 sabotaged the R5 unit, but was under instructions from the Princess to do whatever it takes. |
