So before the Joker gets into the van he's hanging out on a street corner wearing his makeup?  He only puts the mask on as he gets in.  The other bank robbers, who then speak disparagingly of the Joker, should of spotted his face as they approached him on the street.

Modern films, I'm rather partial to the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds.  I won't link it because shame on you if you haven't seen it.

Classic films, I think the opening scene if Kagemusha is brilliant.  Again, shame on you if you haven't seen it.

While not the best, certainly a good one. My father referred to it as "American ballet"

You guys are all on crack.  The best first 5 minutes or opening scene of a movie goes to the movie "London"

There's some incredible choices in this thread.   Mine,  strictly for personal reasons is the blues brothers.

Taps had some good stuff in the first 5-10 minutes.

Yep. You can always count on a good opening to a Bond film.

The opening five minutes of Serenity was a single long take that introduced us to the main characters and the ship.  It was beautifully done.

I think it was the latest Star Trek.

Watch that in full dolby digital on a great theater system.  Specifically, the part with the Enterprise rising out of the ocean.

Seriously amazing.

Stupid, unrealistic, and the brass/bullets are very badly animated cheap CGI.  Don't even look physical.

I really hate the over reliance on CGI over practical effects.

For me, Saving Pvt Ryan and Gladiator are the 2 best in recent movies.

Here's a better link for the opening scene of GLADIATOR.

Wolfgang Gullich was the one who did that stunt.  He did the climb out of the roof with a Stallone mask, and I seem to recall that he did it without rope.

ETA: There were some close-ups of Stallone pulling through the roof, but he had a thin line of 5.5mm Spectra cord attached to his harness, which was later CGI'd out.  The wider areal shots, though, were of Gullich free-soloing, IIRC.
