Try to avoid trannies.  Try not to get tangled up in the fire coral.

We rented a canoe, loaded  a 30 pack, and eventually got stuck on a reef.

Didn't like all that much but was only there a couple days.  I didn't go to the other side of the island maybe check that out.

I never realized guam was a place tourists could visit.

For some reason I thought it was only accessable by military.

have they ever opened midway up to tourism?

I know its a group of tiny islands, but I rmember my dad visiting there when he was stationed in Japan.  I can't remember if it was official business or not.

When I was there, seaman's club was very good.   woods were (still are?) inhabited with tree snakes, some of which very poisonous. Very hard on the bird population, too.

How much of my scuba gear should I bring?   The amount of space I have to pack it may be limited.

As much as you want.

Rentals are reasonably priced and decent enough for rentals.  That said I take my own every time I go.

depends on if you are military or not. when i was there i went to the navy bases Gab Gab (sp?) Beach, that was awesome to snorkel and dive in. also some okay beaches at Anderson AFB.
jeffs pirate cove is pretty popular.
def go check out the caves around the island.
also if you are military there is a guy on Anderson AFB that does tours around the island featuring mostly WW2 stuff.
Two Lover's Point (if you are with special lady friends )
Gun Beach, and the beaches around the Outrigger, and Hyatt hotels has some touristy stuff. (as well as good scenery )
and also Talofofo Falls

+1 on the falls.  It's been years ago, but I remember a jeep getting an axle blown off by left over ordinance from WWII. The rains would uncover UXOs on a regular basis.

Pretty much this....

I've spent a good bit time there.

Go to MDA for diving trips.
Marianas Trench for supper
Go to the Navy base past Andersen & there's a cool secluded beach (it's a hike down a fucking cliff though)
Hike all the falls

Oh yea. The Viking

ETA-

Dive spots I can remember:

Gab-Gab
GabGab2
Blue Hole
Gun Beach

I'll try to think of some more.

We also had some guys go pig hunting (with bows)
Might be an option If you're there long enough. I would also consider renting a "Guam bomb" cheap rental car if you don't have any non .gov trans

It's been years ago. The tank farm. Bunch of tanks left over from WW2. I was there 75 thru 78.

Add Piti Bomb Hole and the Blue Hole to the dive list. The Blue Hole is accessible by boat. I used to teach at Guam Tropical Dive Station and would recommend them for a dive operation. They do night boat dives on the weekend and Wednesday night. I highly recommend a night dive there!

Hike the Spanish Steps at Naval Activities Base. It's at the mouth of Apra Harbor and really pretty at the mouth of the Harbor.

For a good time go to Santa Rita beach on the base, swim out and around the right to the rope swing at the mouth of the came

buy them there, you can test models in the water

I forgot

The cheapest bottle rental is on Anderson, you can rent a car full take it to any beach and dive all day w/o refilling.

If you refill during the day hit the navy side.

The only way you get cheaper air, is to do a trip with mda-which is the best deal of all. I recommend them, especially for the advanced dives

The only way to beat a mda deal, is to rent a boat on navy, get air at anderson and get 4-5 buddies and do your own dives.

Don't walk to the edge, it may capsize...

People there work hard every day to help make sure that doesn't happen.
They monitor how many people are on each part of the island at any time and will dynamically redistribute ballast to maintain total balance with great accuracy.  They're very good at what they do, and you rarely ever even realize they're there.  It's a thankless job that most everyone takes for granted.
Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile

The barges are part of the ballast-carrying system.  They use a combination of rail, barges, and large trucks, in that order.
They finally got the gyroscope finished about about 10 years ago, but they still maintain the ballast system to make the gyroscope's job easier.  I think they treat the scope basically as a backup system or a cushion so they don't have to reposition the ballast as often or as precisely.  Gives them a bigger safety margin.  Also in case the gyroscope fails or has a problem.
