Neither have I until now.
Story Link A group of about 30 people conducted an armed self-defense patrol in parts of South Dallas on Wednesday afternoon. The people, members of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, walked along sidewalks and into a neighborhood restaurant along Martin Luther King Boulevard. The gun club said in a release that the “recent murders of unarmed black, brown, and whites across the United States of America has eradicated trust in the police.” <Continued in link> |

I wonder what would happen if it was a KKK group marching around with guns?
|

A black gun club is a really good idea.
If black people could get some marksmanship training it would really cut down on the number of innocents killed by stray bullets in certain neighborhoods. |

I support the rights of all people to bear arms, and I think the black community should arm themselves.
They lost my support when they made it a racial thing. They support the rights of all citizens (but they support the rights of non-whites more. ) |

How much you wanna bet that an article appears in the next few days discussing how many of these guys were arrested for illegally possessing a firearm because they are a convicted felon?

Their right as much as anyone else but a bunch of people walking the streets with guns won't help anything. They might even get their asses shot.

Fine with me. It invalidates the "they would never stand for black people being armed" bullshit that is constantly thrown around.

I was wondering how ar I was going to have to go in this thread before someone pointed that out. That being said, I've read plenty of abhorrent attitudes from white people on this board toward blacks and I've never entertained the notion that they should be denied their rights, so I can't exactly change my stance because of someone's race. To paraphrase Yosemite Sam and Bugs Bunny "The Constitution works for everyone - even racists!" |

So this is where Huey ended up. I wonder what happened to the news

I believe there is one in MD around the Baltimore-Washington area, called Metro Gun Owners or Club something to that effect. If I recall correctly, they're black-focused, but not black exclusive and one of their goals is educating kids about gun safety and exposing them to guns.
I support anyone who wants to take the time to introduce urban youth to shooting sports and gun safety and teach them about lawful gun ownership. The inner cities have a tremendous number of voters and usually lean far to the left. Educating voters about guns can only help. |

Quoted: Why in the fuck would Huey Lewis form a black gun club? View Quote Do you like Huey Lewis & The News? Their early work was a little too 'new-wave' for my taste, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own - both commercially and artistically. I think their undisputed masterpiece is 'Hip To Be Square', a song so catchy most people probably don't listen to the lyrics - but they should!

Arfcom: maybe cops shouldn't shoot so many of you if you policed your own shitty communities.
Blacks in Texas: we will patrol and police our own shitty community. Arfcom: it's like the black klan! |

So maybe they are going to do a barbecue and swap meet with the George Wallace Gun Club.

1. We demand the immediate end to police brutality, harassment, and murder of the people. I agree with this… Most police departments are still pretty honest and clean, so this doesn’t apply to them. But some police departments really, really, need to be cleaned up. 2. We assert the right of the people, particularly those of color, to bear arms and protect themselves where local, state, and the federal government have historically failed to do so. I agree with this too… I would take out the bit about “particularly those of color” since I think it’s a right that applies to all. 3. We demand that the media, in coordination with police, cease immediately assassinating the character of victims subject to police terrorism. Sure… Of course I would also demand that the media stop assassinating the character of police officers (or anyone else) who has to shoot someone in self defense. View Quote |
