I plan to be quite well off.  Or to [coc violation] if my 401k is taken from me.

Yup. I consider fairly young people who believe SS will still be there for them to be fools.

I save about 35% of my gross income. So far so good, but I still have a ways to go.

If SS is around when I retire, it might be enough for me to buy coffee with.  What gets me is the 45-55 year old guys at work that think SS will provide for them.

Ill retire at 55, 7 more years. Ill downsize the house but more property up north. Will be ok.

I don't want to be a 70 yr old guy selling off his collection to buy meds or someshit...

I just turned 49. My wife retired last month. I will work for 5 more years.

Been saving on my own since 19 for it.

I retired (not by choice, I turned a layoff into retirement) two years ago at age 56.
I had saved enough to just simply drop out of the work force and retire.

I can make it without social security but SS will most certainly put steak and top shelf wine back on the menu.....

$650 direct deposited into retirement savings every two weeks. Second largest monthly expense behind mortgage.

No. I enjoy stretches of retirement now whilst I'm young enough to enjoy them. The government will seize retirement funds eventually anyhow.

I am retired and lucky enough to have a pension, social security and savings. However, I don't trust the government so I enjoy life one day at a time and hope for the best.

I don't believe in traditional retirement. I will probably die working in one fashion or another. However, I continue to strive to live below my means and work toward financial independence. Right now that means maxing an IRA and 401k each year. Sometime I'd like to reduce that amount  and put some into real estate and a down payment on my first home. That's the plan anyways!

Good luck and best wishes to all but I just think differently about these things.

If you retire before 80 you better be pretty frickin well off or you are not thinking things through. People now a days are able bodied well into their 80's and living into their 90's. I am 24 and I know by the time I hit old age people will be living well into the 100 and 110's. Retirement at 60? lol. With everything that I see and read the majority of the time people become unhealthy quickly and run out of money well before they actually perish. Then they become Medicaid and SS bottom feeders when they live 15 years long than they expected.

I plan to save and invest all I can possibly (will have 200k from inheritance soon). But I will have to be forcibly let go from my career when it's all said and done and if they do I will be a greeter at walmart if I have to. 20 hours of work a week will keep me happy health and supplement Medicaid, SS, and my IRA. As far as enjoying life?? I'll trade the 40hr week for a 20hr one and I'll take 10 weeks of a year at a job I can replace don't care about.

The math I see says that retirement won't exist in the future the way we see it now.

If you believe that then invest in real estate.

Impossible to save enough to retire on. Relying on a pension plan plus supplemental investment savings. Cutting costs to the bare minimum over the next 5 years.

Of course! I am an idiot and invest in my own future instead of blowing it all now and having others invest in my future sometime down the road.  Why try when FREE MONEY BITZCHIZZ!

Planning a Roth IRA, plus after 25 years at work I will have a good retirement package, Alabama state retirement is pretty good.  If that isn't enough, I will go to Georgia and work, they pay teachers better than AL does, but retirement isn't as good.

They're probably right. I don't think we'll actually ever cut benefits for people who are receiving them, we'll just cut them for future recipients. And since Social Security doesn't go completely bankrupt for 15 years or so, they'll probably get in under the wire.

Now, the 35 year olds... we'll work until we're 90, then, if we're lucky, maybe there will be something for us.

This is why you have to start saving EARLY, and let your money work for you for many, many years.

People sometimes say how badly I got fucked in my Divorce.

I absolutely did not. I kept her hands OFF my retirement... everything I lost was worth it.

Working at it.  I know for sure I will not collect a dime of Social Security so I better.

I think I might be able to retire at 50, or at least be able to sustain myself without a salary.  That's 9 years from now.

I'm putting 20% of my salary into my 401K and my employer adds 6%.

But I had a kid at 42 so I will be working forever.

Where is the "No, I don't plan to retire even if I can" option?

I've made longterm investments and plan to make more, but even if they payout what I hope/think, I'll just end up doing something with them besides sitting on my lazy ass.
