Actually without corporate conspiracy, I thought it was more like an expeditionary unit.  The Sulaco wasn't as big as it appeared and was mostly automated.  So they send guys out in Platoon strength.  It was projected to be an investigation.  Not necessarily a combat action.  If it topped off they would go back to the ship and if they HAD to fight on the ground they'd wait for a proper company or division.  In the DC, Hudson goes on about Particle Beam Phalanx and how it could fry a city. The Sulaco had nukes.  You gotta understand.  70 families isnt that many people.  Maybe 280 people.  There are 4 man police departments who maintain cities that size with few issues.

They weren't expecting trouble.  If you accept that Burke planned it all out he probably underestimated or didn't fully buy Ripleys account that they could breed that fast. He just wanted one or two then realizes too late his mistake.

it was a self admitted allegory of Vietnam.   A well equipped,  well armed army up against a primitive force that they took for granted.   Even the toss away line by Hicks about 'bug hunts' suggest they spent their previous deployments dialing in orbital strikes or air strikes or artillery on native insect populations.  Like glorified exterminators.  Very few actual human v. human engagements if any.

It's doesn't seem smart to send only 1 squad to a far off planet when you don't know what's going on. Two squads at least would have left a reserve component in the ship in case the main squad ran into trouble and needed bailing out.

But then you would lose 2 squads, which would be twice as expensive as just losing one.

Only if you assumed that no matter what happened you would be losing whomever you sent. Maybe that was the intention but I doubt it since the entire underlying theme of the series was that the corporation wanted at least one of these things brought back.

1. Colonies would have commercial ship traffic
2. Hudson queued up 17 zetabytes of Arcturian Poontang porn before heading down the planet, so they can track that.

because if you're a huge company covertly using military assets to scout out a potential new technology for the arms marketplace, then maybe sending a large force of marines on a secret mission is A: difficult, and B: indiscreet.

Titanic did her and her kids in:

From a wikea page:

Goldstein was born to a Jewish family in Los Angeles, California and was raised in Beverly Hills. Her first film role was in James Cameron's Aliens (1987), playing the Hispanic character PFC Jenette Vasquez. She initially thought the role was about immigration due to the title and showed up for her audition to play a tough-as-nails space marine in a short skirt and high heels.

She also appeared as the vampire, Diamondback, in Near Dark (1987), Officer Meagan Shapiro in Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), Janelle Voight in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), the Enterprise-B science officer in Star Trek Generations (1994), and an Irish immigrant mother in James Cameron's blockbuster, Titanic (1997).

Goldstein is the proprietress of the store Jenette Bras, a large-size bra specialist known for its slogan "The alphabet starts at D".

Decent post, but what about the fact that we know that there are now multiple planets that have ben settled by humans?  I mean the population to draw on for a military would be HUGE so I would imagine that the size of the military would be rather large.  A Battalion to them would be like a Platoon to us.

Everything else can be explained by the fact that many of them were short and their Lt was a 90 day wonder.

As stated, recon mission to confirm, and Ripley and the "xenowhat" were considered a far fetched story by a crazy woman who'd been frozen for 57 years and out adrift.

Burke was the only one who knew it was going to go bad, and he also would've pushed for a smaller contingent so he wouldn't have to try to wipe out an entire company or battalion.  They might be missed.  12 guys and a synthetic on the Sulaco, referred to as a doomed ship anyway (in either the novelization written parallel to the movie, or the tech handbook)... much easier to go missing.

Because the movie budget only allowed for a few extras?

That likely is the reason.

For example, the pods they wake up in when they arrive at the planet were 12 seen on the screen, but only 6 on the studio set. They used a mirror to double up the six to look like twelve.

Aliens was a very low budget flick compared to other movies of the time. $17m. By comparison, Star Trek IV in the same year was $24m, and much of that was to pay Shatner and Nimoy.

Pretty sure extras don't have lines and that's part of why they get paid so much less.

Every actor playing a Marine in Aliens had a line, even those quickly forgotten, like Spunkmeyer, Wierzbowski, and Dietrich.

It was a black ops mission by Weyland Yutani to assess and maybe harvest whatever organisms that attacked the colonist. The company didn't give a shit about the colonists. This is straight from the company man's mouth. The value of a xenomorph specimen was worth the deaths of the colonists. The small numbers of marines point to a scouting mission also less marines means less loose ends for the corporation. The mission also could've been company sponsored, which is why the company guy was there and there were few marines.

I don't think budget wasn't a concern, James Cameron doesn't give a shit about how much his movies cost.

Maybe but LV 426 was a small pluto-like planet..  if it were like Earth 2.0 or something they'd not just send in Marines but the Army and Air Force/Spacy

That's if you accept that the Colonial Marines are a new Branch from the Marine Corps.   Like a Marine Corps Coast Guard of sorts strictly for Colony matters where there is no standing military or even law enforcement,  hence 'bug hunts' maybe occasional efforts at curbing piracy

There are still costumes and props to consider. Both of which were important details in keeping the cost down already. There's a huge list of info here if you want to learn more:

Because it served the Aristotelian development of the plot.

If the screen writers had sent an entire armored division the aliens would have been squashed in 5 minutes and the film would have become very boring and indeed quite redundant after that.
