Special Operations Weather - don't think anyone's mentioned that yet. Sounds pretty cool.
I'm holding out for Special Operations Thermodynamicist - you know, when the mission calls for parachuting a small, middle-aged man into a combat zone armed with a calculator, a light rifle, and really, really pissy attitude towards people who are loose in their treatment of significant figures. |

SOWT are the 'weather guys' who jump in to provide the specific weather conditions at the target area. Generally will work as part of a team (including CCT, JTAC, and/or PJ depending on mission). They are assigned to Special Tactics Units and do NOT do the local weather forecast for the evening news...

From what I've seen, AF Security Forces does more than I expected. There are some doing security patrols outside the wire in Afghanistan, for example.
However, AF SF (the initials are definitely a problem) does a lot less than some AF SF members believe. They are not interchangeable with infantry, and would not be able to complete most missions that similar sized infantry units do regularly. I've been In all 4 branches of the DoD, (mostly reserve components) the first two infantry, then USNR as an MA, now the Air Guard in SF. Quoted:

A couple weeks later not all of us had turned in our forms, and one of our cadre walked into the classroom and told us "if you don't turn in this form by Friday, I'm entering one FOR you that only has 'skycop' on it." Most of us completed our forms by COB that day. I ended up getting choice #3: 21M. Very glad I did not get my #1 (logistics) or #2 (aircraft mx). I don't remember my #4 or #5 choices anymore. |

Unless he was CCT or PJ, he's a fucking dipshit. If he's referring to Security Forces, he should be laughed at and ridiculed until he runs home crying. This. And they are nothing even fucking close to infantry. Well, as Websters defines Infantry as "soldiers who fight on foot", then, yes, technically they are Air Force Infantry. They are not Marine Infantry, they are not Army Infantry, but they may be called upon to defend a piece of real estate from fortified positions, or hasty positions just as any other soldier in the defense would. Not too many troops getting stuck operating at bare bones bases these days, but back in the early days of the GWOT, quite a few of us did. Ok, yeah, it is not too long before the tents go up and the A/C gets turned on, but the career field is still trained to operate in very austere locations, with minimal support from the other branches. Organic support includes 60mm mortar teams, .plus 50 Cals, Mk-19's, both mounted and dismounted, sniper teams, etc. A typical deployed squad will have 3 M-203's, 2 M-249's, a 240 and an M-9, and M-4's, plus AT-4's, M-67's, and Claymores, (command fired only). There is training in basic ground combat skills such as patrolling, conducting ambushes, setting up a defensive perimeter, etc. All of that comes from Army manuals, and the instructors are mostly Army. And then, of course, they also encounter and learn from the reserve component which consists of older troops who just happened to spent their youth humping hills and chasing tail as Marine 0311's. My unit had three jarheads, two grunts and an MP, as well as a bunch of Army guys, 11 Bravos and even a air defense troop. Dont be too hard on the kids, they just dont know the difference, and they are often parroting stuff they are told in tech school and at Camp Bulis. |

Good comment. The only time I can recall being involved with this type of activity was on gear ups for deployments, etc. Keep in mind this was Cold War/GW1 timeframe. The usual day to day duties of the missile field were MOSTLY mundane with a ton of unneeded BS and "busy work". Our units training tempo wasn't bad and that part I did enjoy. Since then we have trained a ton of "SF" Security Forces types and like any other career field, some are GTG, and some are complete turds. |
