Asphalt shingles.  About 4-5 years old.  Due to it not being a very steep pitch, and the fact that I live in a very rural area with a lot of trees in my yard, I have a moss issue on my roof.

How do I safely remove it, and is there a way to prevent it from coming back?  I've heard strips of titanium - is this bs?

Thanks!

Roofer told me to spray it with some stuff that kills it, can't remember the name.  I'd check Home Depot or ACE.

Don't pressure wash it. It's not good for the shingles.

You can try the moss remover stuff, but I've found it doesn't work very well.

Tide laundry detergent (original powdered kind in box) will kill it but they say the oil in the detergent isn't really that good for the life of the shingles. I've used it and it works.

First you have to get rid of the problem, cut the branches and or trees back from the roof. The most damaging thing to shingle roofs is trees. Yes you can power wash, no it's not good for the roof and you have to be very very careful. There are several asphalt shingle detergents on the market.

Moss? or fungus.

Are there clean areas beneath and galvanized flashing?

If there is, get some zinc oxide, and spread it around. Most of neat the peak of the roof, so that it can be slowly washed down the surface. Or get some copper based fungicide and spread it around.

Then next time, but the fungus resistant shingles.

Copper sulfate mixed in hot water and spray it on the shingles...........scrub a bit with a brush about 1 hour later while rinsing with water.

Don't need a very strong solution from my experience.........maybe 1 to 2 tablespoons dissolved in a gallon of hot water.

Copper Sulfate an Moss

Thanks for all the help.  I will try some of the above.  I just tried peeing on it, and yelling....but it just sat there.  So I might check out the zinc strips next.

There arent any trees in close proximity per se.  But I have a shit load of really really really tall trees that block the sun.  Not a chance I will be cutting them down...they will hit stuff in the next county.

Bleach, and lots of it?  I don't think bleach is bad for asphalt.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

Lead strips work even better than zinc strips----that is what I used and it completely solved my roof problem.

I use a ice scraper slash breaker and gently scrape the moss off towards the ground or way from the peak with the way the shingles rest.
Then a mixture of bleach and water (little bleach to a lot of water) and I spray the roof.

Then get one of these

The trees are about 87' tall.

I never had much luck with the copper REMOVING the moss once it was established, but after I cleaned the shingles manually (very carefully, it was an old roof), I put copper along each side of the peak for about three inches.  The rain (this was in western Washington - Issaquah), washed enough miscellaneous copper salts from the metal to keep the moss from coming back.  Worked great.  Two cautions:  ground the copper and put up a lightning rod, and don't count on anything growing where the runoff from the roof hits the ground - it won't.

This!

It's the absolute easiest way to get rid of moss/mold/mildew growth on a roof. You literally just spray it on and don't do anything else to it. I use this stuff all the time.

I'm a roofing consultant, by the way.

ETA I usually buy it at Lowes.

Try bleach in a spray bottle and hose it off after 10 to 15 minutes.
Don't use pressure washer.

We use a 50\50 bleach water solution. Let it sit and you a hard on hose to spray it off.

I used a spray for killing moss on shingles, and followed up with moss killer powder spread over the roof. That knocked it down hard.

No bleach, no powerwash, no scrapers.

Take a pump up sprayer and mix up the strongest bleach you can find. We have 12+% but you can probably get 8+%. Mix that 50/50 with water. Maybe 3 gallon of bleach/2gallons of water if really soiled.

You need a small amount of soap, like 6 or 8 oz. to mix in this. You have to find something local to you that is compatible with bleach. Go buy a degreaser at Walmart or Dollar General. I know a lot of guys use that.

Spray this mix on the roof, being careful about the runoff. Water the grass and plants under the eaves or at the runoff collection spot liberally. You can't water this area too much both before and after the application.

Leave the mix on the roof to dry. The next rain will remove anything that is left. If you have thick build up, you may need multiple applications.

Cheap easy and low effort removal. This is how a professional would do it if you called one. If anyone says they will high pressure wash it, tell them to hit the road. The professional will have specialized low pressure equipment to apply the mix even if he is using his high pressure washer with a low pressure setting.

This is the way to do it. Or you can call a professional, Cost around $225-$250 for a general house size of 2500-3000 sqft.
