I'm thinking about getting an Akubra hat.  Probably the Cattleman style.  Have any of you guys had one of these? Are thy good to go?

Good lookin' hat.  There's a nice place on 6th Street in Austin, and then there's Peter's Brothers in Fort Worth.

ETA:  Most of these shits have never worn a proper hat.

The whole point is to have a fur felt hat that is naturally waterproof for hiking.

I have no experience with Akubra, but I've heard good things about them. There are hat forums that have good info on fur felt hats.

If that badd-ass mofo from GI Joe could pull it off then all I can advise you to do when you get one is to
say "M'lady" a lot.

I have a couple of Akubras. I don't wear them very often, but they are definitely nice hats.

If you're going to do it, may as well do it properly.

I have an Akubra, it's nice. They're Australian made and made out of pure fur felt. That said, I can't imagine they'd be much different than a nice Stetson or something. I suppose it'd be more of a novelty in the States

I've got one that I wear occasionally when it cools off; it's too hot in the summer.  I'm actually working in Australia at the moment and most of the folks tend to wear the vented straw and canvas hats, I've only seen a couple of fancy fur felt hats in Perth.

Akubra hats are good to go. Better than the Stetson, etc., varieties at the same price point. I have four different ones and they're as good as it gets short of beaver felt for 3x the price.

I own two,  they are awesome. I like the way the felt absorbs the sweat when I am golfing.

I was thinking of getting a Territory instead of a Cattleman, but I was afraid that extra wide brim might be a bit too much.

Light Horse?

I really don't know much about modern uniforms, but I thought only the Light Horse wore the ostrich plumes back a hundred years ago or so.

Yup.  I particularly like the one about "better hat at 1/3 the douchiness".  But I think he might have been referring to the hat pictured in the 2nd post.  That's not the hat that I'm thinking about getting.  I'm thinking about the Cattleman (pictured below).  So, now I'm wondering just what is the douchiness level of the Cattleman?  I can live with some level of douchiness, but I've got to know exactly what I'm dealing with here before I go walking around with that thing on my head.

I had a cotton (i think) one when I was a kid in the late 70s or early 80s. It was camo & Australian military issue.
The brim snapped up on the right side so you didn't knock your hat off while shooting.

I thought it was gay.

These guys have good information on durability, longevity, fur quality, how water resistant a particular hat is, etc.

I can't recall the username, but there is a member who collects hats and vintage clothing. He used to have a huge GD thread.

I've never been to Texas as an adult, but I just have this feeling that hats in Texas and hats outside Texas are probably not the same thing a-tall.

You don't want to know about that hat outside Texas.

Are we talking about Canada?  That's about the only hat I care about outside Texas, other than Borsalinos.  Dorfman Pacific have a decent line.

As long as it isn't purple or festooned with feathers it should be fine.

meh...even the ones with the feather don't look half bad...

in the age of baseball caps with wide, flat brims being worn sidewise, one could certainly make a worse choice in headgear.
