From one of the articles, the plane is retired.  I don't necessarily know precisely what that means in relation to an aircraft like that, but it sounds to me like it's never doing another gun run one way or the other.

Reusing it to run through hurricanes, is that not a badass retirement? I think this is neat.

Yep, better than getting turned to scrap.

How does it stay balanced without the boomstick?

Even without the cannon, loading it up with scientific equipment, and sending it into a dangerous mission to get info that can save american lives is still a good missionmfor the plane.

Much better then scrapping it.

No kidding!
They built the airplane specifically to carry that cannon.

I think that might qualify for understatement of the year.

I imagine they'll put weights and/or equipment where the cannon was.

Step 1: See if airframe can survive storm cells.

Step 2: Install cannon again and load with some kind of magnesium .etc round designed to produce a massive amount of ambient heat.

Step 3: Fire enough rounds from the GAU-8 into the targeted area where a new warm front could dissipate the storm.

If it was originally a trainer, did it ever even have the gun to begin with?
View Quote

That's not what "trainer" means in this case.

It was a ground maintenance trainer.
It went to Davis-Monthan in 2006 and was used as a ground maintenance trainer.
That's one of the reasons why it was chosen, it didn't fly for 7 years.
That's 7 years of life it still has on its wings and landing gear.

The A-10 started with the gun, and the desire to make it fly.

Hagel said it was a “close call” to drop the A-10, but he backed the decision to retire what he called an outdated aircraft. The Air Force has indicated before that it could retire the A-10 with Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter on the way. Its plan calls for replacing the A-10 with the F-35 in the early 2020s, Hagel said.

They could load the cannon with rock salt rounds to seed the clouds and dissipate the tornado.

Not every airplane lives on in it's original role. WTF is with all the 'my god, the guns gone' rhetoric? Lots of ex mil aircraft have found useful duties after is retired.

Load it up with smaller BLU 82s...fuel air bombs...drop one into the tornados vortex and detonate...the blast would so adversely disorganize the mechanics of the tornado it would fall apart...do it over unpopulated areas of couse..

Yes, a lot of military aircraft have but this is the only military aircraft that was completely designed  and built around the weapon. That cannon was an integral part of the planes identity and structure. It's like taking part of it's soul away.

Scientist watched Sharknado 2 and realized explosives no longer stop tornados. No need for the gun anymore....

The gun and magazine will be replaced by a holding tank for genetically-engineered mutant flying dolphins . . .

GEMFDs released from the A-10 into the sharknado will kill the sharks.

But then you have to deal with the subsequent dolphin rape. Genetically-engineered mutant flying dolphin rape.
