I just checked Davidsons and they were around $100 more than what this pawn shop is asking. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Weren't these $300 rifles

Bought my house in 1981 for $65,000.  Today it's worth $240,000.  Not sure I see your point.

Unlike your house the 2014 Rossi/Taurus can't hold a candle to a 1981 Rossi. They are simply low-rent poorly built guns these days where before they were a low-cost decently built gun. Still not as good as a Marlin or Winchester but a functional/accurate gun.

If one buys new it should be through a distributor like Davidsons with a no questions asked return policy.

You were seeing a MRSP price. Look for a dealer that uses Davidsons, prices will be much lower.

I can't remember....maybe 4-5 years ago.

here's "Puma 8 + 1 357 Magnum w/16" Round Barrel/Blue Finish"

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_372/products_id/39974/Puma+8+%2B+1+357+Magnum+w16%22+Round+BarrelBlue+Finish

was $422 shipped, but now out of stock

I has replaced the 10/22 as the sundays afternoon family plinker

It's easier to load up 1000 rounds of cast lead and a light charge of CLAYS powder ( DILLON ), than it is to find 22LR

kids really love it, 16" barrel make it easy for them to handle

....but I can also shoot 140gr hornady HP's at 1980fps.  THWACK

No reason not too if you really want it.

I really want one. It's just me trying to find a better deal.

Found one for $491 on grabagun. Has anyone dealt with this dealer?

Mine ate everything (.38 or .357) I fed it except Blazer aluminum, no problems with about 300-400 rounds through it, sold it to a buddy, he's got another 200 or so rounds through it without problems. He polished up the action, said there was a considerable amount of debris in there and lots of rough edges, now it cycles as smoothly as my Henry. If I was gonna get another .38/.357 lever it would be another rossi.

I bought a used one a couple of years ago and it's been great - even reloads.

Glad I didn't hear all this bullshit before I bought my wife her 16" M92. It runs just fine not a single hiccup so far and I think we're about 200 rounds in. It has a better trigger than my friend's Marlin 1894, too. I paid about $500 from Bud's.

Found a used one for $250 about 10yrs ago. It quickly replaced my 10/22 as the "fun" gun.
Sold it to my brother when I ran into a Marlin 336 in .44mag.
Love the Marlin, but I do miss the Rossi.

A friend bought one last year $475 for blued. We shot it the next day and spent more time clearing jams since it wouldn't eject. I suggest looking at Henry instead of Rossi.

I bought one this year, for about the same price. No problems to speak of. Sites are dead on.

I've been wanting a .357 lever action for some time now. I just got off the phone with a pawn shop that has one in stock for $559. It's a 16" stainless steel. Bud's has the same rifle priced at $540. Is this a decent price or should I keep looking for a better deal?

What does the hive say?

I got my blued Rossi 16in 357 from Buds for $300.  Love the gun, it's a tack driver.

And when did you buy it? Naming off prices doesn't mean much if you don't include how many years ago it was.

Maybe about a year ago , maybe a year and a half.

I would not buy a Rossi of any kind unless it was a older Interarms import.

Exactly.  I have one of the older Interarms 92 copies, and its a great rifle.

We had several of the Rossi rifles in the gun store where I work. I was NOT impressed. Sold both of them fairly quickly, and both of them came back within a couple of weeks to be returned to the manufacturer. One of them wouldn't feed worth a shit, and the other one had a barrel so bad you couldn't hit a barn door with it.
If you want a really good 357 lever gun, there are 3 to chose from: The marlin 1894C, the Cimarron 1892, and the Browning B92. The Browning is the best, but they haven't been made in 20 years or so, and are getting hard to find. The Marlins are excellent, but are also getting hard to find, and the Cimarrons, at about $1100, are over-priced but excellent quality.

I'd pass on the Rossi, and hold out for one of the 3 above.

ETA: I just checked GunBroker, and there are about a dozen of the Marlin 1894s listed for sale.

I have a 20" Rossi 92 in 45Colt that has been flawless and extremely accurate. The only mods I did was replacing the bolt safety with a deletion plug and replaced the plastic follower with a stainless one. It's the only Rossi/Taurus I'd buy and I did so mainly because of the price when compared to other 92s from other brands. I like it quite a bit.

ETA: I bought this brand new from a LGS for $450 before tax.

My dad has a 16" Rossi 92 in .357. I've shot it and it's extremely accurate. It jams with .38spl ammo quite regularly, but does well with .357 ammo. If I had one in .357, I don't think I'd use anything less than 158gr. ammo. It seems to do best with that weight while it's sometimes a little sluggish with 125gr.

Thanks for costing me money by starting this damned thread, OP !

Seriously though, this has been very informative because I have been wondering about these, but apprehensive.

This....And get the video showing how to slick up the action, or send it in for an action job. The guy works wonders with Rossi lever guns.

Well no luck with the pawn shop lowering the price. Spent the morning checking out some other places with no such luck in finding other rifles. Target ammo in .357 mag seems to be scarce as well.

Pour your own 357s for target ammo. If you wanna make some full power, nearing 2000 fps hunting ammo, it's only a bit more expensive.

Like someone else said, mine too has replaced the 22 for plinking. I have a 16" carbine now, but I would love to get a 24" blued octagon barreled rifle.

After enough calling around I finally found a blued 16" locally.

I've already put a few rounds down range and it ran without any hiccups, hopefully that continues.

I believe they raised the price $100 over last year. I have a few and enjoy them. I've never really had a problem with any firearm I have ever bought. I see hate for virtually every firearm ever made from time to time on the site.

I picked up a nice 1981 vintage JM Marlin 1894c from a friend about 6 weeks ago.  Problem is, my wife loves it, claims it, and told all her friends I bought "her" a new gun.

So beware if you're married.

I have one, got it a few years ago at Sportsmans Warehouse for $370, IIRC.  Blued, 20" barrel.  Holds ten rds of .357 or 11 of .38 special.  Been a fine gun, and is a frickin' laser.  The wood is nothing special, and the safety is silly, I just ignore it.

Mine is a Puma M92, from back when Legacy Sports was the importer.
