Yes.
that is why my wife (No Pics) and I hate most people. They always say " I'm broke" and then pull a $20.00 out of their pocket and order lunch while we eat Wiener-Water-Soup for lunch. If you're broke, you don't have any Fucking Money. None. Nada, Zip, Zilch. |

Once. Wife had left me and I was feeling sorry for myself and not taking care of myself or my situation. Did not have a bank account. Fridge in the house (she left) was empty. Truck was at 1/4 tank. I was hungry and didn't have any money after burning through the $300 I had. To make it even better, I was supposed to get my kid for the weekend with no money, food, or gas.
Feeling sorry for yourself is sad and pathetic but when it affects your kid, it's time to grow up. I promptly got my head unstuck out of my ass and fixed my situation. Since then, I've worked to always have a backup. |

Yup. Packed my shit after college and moved to CO. 4 months later I was flat broke and too fucking stubborn to work for a small wage. I came back, pulled my head from my ass and now all good. That was 10yrs ago

Nope, I've been poor but never broke. That and I've never been unemployed since I was 14.

I picked up coke bottles and cashed them in in college to eat hot dogs at the convenience store across the street.
Two for .99. When bottles went from .03 to .05 a piece I got a 66% raise!!!! |

Yes.
Not often, and not for long, thank God. ETA: I have also been stuck late at work for unexpected OT, too late for call out, unable to leave, standing in front of a bank of vending machines, with $200 cash and two credit cards in my pocket, but nothing less than a $10 bill, and gone hungry. |

I remember being flat ass broke with all my credit cards maxed out. Of course this was my own fault. Long ago I fucked up and had to take all my spare change to coinstar and deposit $20 in the atm or else I would have been something like $0.80 overdrawn after the rent check cleared. Used to know someone that would get a cash advance on one credit card to pay the minimum on another.

Yep. Pisses me off when my GF (generals daughter) wets herself because she has to get by on $200 for two weeks after a shopping spree.
LAWD. I could eat for 2 months on that if I HAD to. She acts like it's the end of the world. Welcome to postgrad life. I have more money now than I EVER did living at home. |

You ever try to eat two pounds of rice in a day? Yes, I have gone on nothing but rice for weeks on end. Way more filling than Ramen, probably works out to be cheaper. On pay day I used to go all out and buy a Snickers for dinner, sometimes a Pepsi. I am happy to say I now have enough money to enjoy proteins and vegetables as well. |

Yes. The whole time I was in the army.
Single and living in the barracks I was in no danger of starving and I wasn't homeless. I would just spend my whole paycheck. Many times in one night at the strip bar. |

To say we were impoverished growing up would be a lie, but my parents borrowed money from relatives to get by on more than one occasion. I called my mom in college once because I was out of money, she told me that the story was the same at her house so I should find some work somewhere. Things are much better now for everyone (apparently mom and dad saved a bundle after the kids moved out of the house) but you are right. When you have nothing left and you call home only to get told the same thing it's a bit humbling. |

Most Americans have less then $300 in the bank and live pay check to paycheck. You want to see how broke people are just look at the discarded ATM receipts laying on the ground the next time you go to the bank.

Yep--a few times. One time in college I had $5 to spend on food for an entire week, so I bought as much pasta as I could for $5. If you eat a steady diet of nothing but pasta, tThat shit turns to glue somewhere between the time you eat it and the time you crap it out.

A few times in my life.
Once, when I was in 1st grade or so I remember my dad made mac and cheese with hamburger in it. I don't mean Hamburger Helper either. I found a cockroach in mine. Dad said to pick it out and eat or not. There was nothing else. Years later I was in high school. I was going to high school and working. Still living with dad. Ate spaghetti for a few weeks at a time because it was $0.59 for a can of sauce and $0.39 for a package of pasta. I f'n hate spaghetti to this day. In between those stories I went hungry a few times. It made an impression. As long as I am walking this earth my son will never experience that. |

When I was 19, was living in spokane and couldnt get a job if I worked for free (seriously tried everything). Would sell plasma when I could just so I could buy rice and taters if I had money after rent. I literally would get excited finding nickle and dimes on the ground and would walk 4 miles to this scummy gas station to buy a single cigarette for 35cents or two for 50cents. Had missionaries living across the way from me and they would leave "extras" at my door from time to time. Was definitely a low point in my life but at least I was trying to make it. I remember eating taters for over a month straight, you wont believe how many different ways you can cook those bastards with salt pepper and johneys seasoning . To this day I dont smoke or like taters all that much. I almost never use seasoning salt either. Interesting. Is there a way to ID people who that a $20 bill could change their entire lives? Doing a lot better now days and I often try and pass along the kindness that those others shown me back in those days. Nothing major but just small things here and there. Although there was that one time that Bum was 100% honest with me and said he wanted money for booze....I asked how he got the way he was, and he told me his old lady left him and took the kids and he turned to drinking and lost everything from there. Years ago I had to go to the cash advance place to borrow $200 to pay the elect bill, buy food for the family, and put gas in the truck to get to work. Was 5 days shy of payday, and the wife had gotten sick and lost a week of work, and that kicked us into the hole from the edge. Vowed then to NEVER be that close again.
My dad saw the cash advance paperwork in my truck, and was boiling mad I didn't ask him for the $$. Pride is a good motivator. I have several stashes of cash here and there, and now pay bills ahead. Trash is paid a year in advance, and have a years worth of credit with the propane place, but still make the "budget" payments. |

After I graduated high school but before I went to college. I spent 4 months working for a commercial roofer in Orlando, FL. I lived in a dive apartment in a bad part of Orlando (SOBT) with 3 other guys. Although I got a paycheck, it all went to rent, utilities, auto-insurance and cheap beer. I had NO cash in my pocket and often dined on free condiments. Still, having nothing and no one gives you a certain amount of freedom. However, I wouldn't want to live like that again.
