Cocaine and oxycodone flowed freely to Rikers Island inmates with some help from a handful of corrupt correction officers, officials announced Tuesday.

Rikers inmates paid fees ranging from $400 to $900 to guards who used their badges to sneak powder and pills inside over the last six months. Seven correction officers have been implicated in narcotics smuggling and other ethical lapses at the violence-prone jail in an ongoing probe by the city Department of Investigation, officials revealed.

“By smuggling drugs into Rikers Island, these corrections officers jeopardized the safety of the city’s jails and sold their honor as officers of the law,” said DOI Commissioner Mark Peters.

The probe by Peters, Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan and other law enforcement agencies has resulted in criminal charges against 12 Rikers staff.

Some COs should have never passed the polygraphs, psychologicals, drug tests, physicals, etc.  But they obviously do.

How does one who is incarcerated get their hands on $900 cash?

Are there ATMs in prison?
Someone on the outside pays them?

I can understand the lure for the corrections officers.  The pay isn't spectacular.  They are offered a large reward for relatively little risk.

I honestly don't see how this could ever truly be stopped.  Even if you searched every CO when he enters the building, you can't tell me they'd be checking the keisterstash.  For $900, a lot of people would be willing to put a small ziplock baggy up there for an hour.

This guy had five kids with four female COs, two of the COs tattooed his name on themselves. one on the neck and one on the hand. And they brought in drugs, phones and other contraband.

Not surprised in the least.  Every prison has dirty staff.  Hiring processes are not the most stringent.  Its pretty much your breathing here is your job.
