Hmmm. That does narrow down where in WY we could live with a decent commute.

Unless you lived in Laramie the commute would have to be more than 30 miles.  It's around 50 to Cheyenne to the East, 60+ to Ft. Collins, CO to the south.  100 miles to the west to Rawlins with a few small towns with really nothing.  North-good luck.   People do not comprehend the distances in Wyoming.  You have to drive a long way to get to anywhere here.

If you are thinking about moving west, Wyoming really is the epic choice. Lowest population in the country, but great shopping just down the road in Denver, so the wives will be able to get their fill and manage. Montana is cold and windy and the pine bark beetles killed all our trees. Wyoming is God's Country.

Move there.

Total bullshit of course.

God, I miss our combined HTF.  We used to be able to just team up and direct everyone to Idaho.

  Lol

I'm surprised Eukatae didn't have a stroke.

He posted in the OMG Neckbeard subreddit thread the other day and I said 'hello,' but he wisely looked in and chose never to return.

I lived in Gillette, WY, for two years.

They have Winter, Still Winter, Not Winter, and almost Winter.

And the wind blows almost every single day. Not gentle breezes, I mean wind. One "spring" night, the wind took the heavy tarp I had over my motorcycle, secured with four bungee cords. In the  morning, I found exactly one bungee hook still on the bike, and the tarp and other three bungees were all just gone.

Our first year there, it snowed 28 inches on April 24. Or was it 24 inches on April 28? Either way, it got so bad that local police issued decree that NOBODY was allowed to drive outside, not even snowmobilers, as the cops didn't want to have to come recover your dead frozen ass in negative 40 windchill with 5-foot visibility from the snow blowing sideways in the hurricane-force winds.

I really like the summers there, though. All 9 days of it.

We saw some snow in every single month of the year except July and August. On June 4th, the day before headed back down south and east to see family, it snowed half an inch before noon. On June 4th.

Good parts were independent-minded folks, drive-through liquor stores open on Sunday morning, and seeing lots of antelope, mule deer, moose, bear, etc. Had to go to Buffalo or Sheridan to start seeing moose, bear, up in the Bighorn Mountains.

But that winter.......yeesh.......

You can get 4-year degrees from all 7 of the community colleges. I dated a doctor of English this winter, she was making about $56k.
Wife has a PhD in chemistry, and made 97K last year.

She did have course overloads and 20K of that was from summer classes in May & June.

Yeah, see, there is a reason no one lives here.

That wind is no joke. When I worked out there I heard of an old man with a broke down truck who froze to death walking half a mile to his house.

You really got to feel a 35mph wind at -20. It's better at night.

True, but we do have an insidious personal income tax, which Wyoming prudently lacks.  It's like John Galt founded your state and Chairman Mao runs ours.

Wife is seriously considering moving in the next 12 to 18 months. Have considered WY due to low taxes and lack of urban yutes.
Since she works in academia, we would have to live 30 miles or so from a university.

Haha, we only have one 4-year school, U of WY in Laramie.  Unbeliveable but true.

But all the community colleges spread around the state are offering 4 year degrees through the University of Wyoming (If I recall correctly)

You should move to Scottsbluff and harvest sugar beets for a living. That is my advice for you. God bless.

Thanks for the answer. I grew in Scottsbluff, NE and spent alot of time in Torrington. My father lived in Wheatland for many years as well. I have done a lot of elk hunting around Douglas. Love WY just wish I could make a living there.

Years ago my family owned all the land west of the beet factory. I have had my fill.

True, but we do have an insidious personal income tax, which Wyoming prudently lacks.  It's like John Galt founded your state and Chairman Mao runs ours.

I'm sure it's great!  You can probably get a small ranch for whatever your house in Georgia is worth.  Unlike Montana and it's overinflated prices.

Montana has no sales tax, and is much more beautiful.

Lets not even get into MT vehicle registrations costs. Jesus.

Montana educators are damn near volunteers. My wife works for a non-profit involved with rural school districts and as a glorified secretary, makes about twice the avg teacher salary.

Any "pretty" part of MT can be summarized as:

Crazy Income tax
Insane vehicle reg costs
Beyond insane real estate prices
Liberal college town hippies and granolas
Pine beetle infested trees
A "mud season" that is 3 months long
A summer that is 60 days long
No elk because of wolves
Busted ass 1987 Subrarus or 2015 Range Rovers (no in between)
Potholes

GA man would be MUCH happier in Wyoming.

Windiest damn place I've ever been in my entire life.  I was shooting with a friend and fellow ARFcommer just about 15 miles or so south of the WY border once.  I had famously told him that "Colorado doesn't have wind like Kansas." before moving here.

We set up a Texas Star, which, all told, probably weighs around 100lbs or so.  A few minutes later, the wind got so bad that it knocked the entire damn thing over.  And that wasn't even in WY proper!

Yep, beet farming is not for everybody.  First in, last out, and no rest in between.  It's gotten a lot better since RR beets though.

What's up with the windmill pictures?
Really slight HDR?

Yes, HDR setting on my phone.   I was afraid it would be too much for folks to handle without a little HDR setting on the images.

Today the wind was so crazy, I told my wife to keep an eye out for low flying jack rabbits.    Glad I didn't have to drive on i80.

I love your posts, but you make it look depressing out there. I know you guys have trees and mountains and shit, right?

It's green here. Until winter anyways.

It's kind of the point.   We have a very high suicide rate.    They say the wind is the main culprit, but those pictures represent 90% of Wyoming....   Not a joke.

I'm in NW Colorado close to 8500 feet  Your pics look great!  It was -48 last winter, that's air temp.  I had a wind meter but it blew away.
