This is now a warning siren thread?

Heres the one in my home town.  It's about a 1/4 mile from my house, goes off at noon and 9pm everyday.  And is used by the fire dept also.
I grew up with this sound and love it.

I videoed it for posterity before some fuck head gets it shut down one day.

Sounds like ours where I live only ever heard it once.

That's the kind that makes neighborhood dogs howl in unison.

And the local coyotes.

Norks used to blast crap like that across the DMZ on foggy mornings. Really fucked up that whole "Land of the Morning Calm" claim..

It's kind of hard to tell with the lowered visibility, but that looks like it's just outside of Chinatown, around 18th & Clark, over by the Chicago Police HQ.

Technically, you probably could, if you put it in an AR-15 pistol.  But that would have to be settled in court.

Needs moar Chrysler Victory Siren:

The Hemi V8 powered siren is said to be audible for nearly 25 miles when running at full RPM. These were installed as air raid sirens in New York and other large cities.

Most people won't experience this but, I currently work testing fire alarms in schools. The very last thing we do is actully set it off and check the strobes and horns.
Most times it's just loud and annoying but some schools with older systems can be quite eerie. I remember one elementry school with older horns, gave me the creeps as the hallways were very dark, even on a bright sunny day. But being alone with it going off. It just reminds me of resident evil or any movie with some kind of containment failure.

For some reason this thread reminded me of the time a volunteer firefighter passed me at 75MPH or so on a back road with his head stuck out the wondow yelling WEEEEEWAAAAA WEEEWAAA WEEEEWAAAA.

Sounds like a lot of echo and one of those old Cold War sirens that rotates at about 4 or 5 rpm.  We had one of those sirens where I grew up and even with no tall buildings to echo off of it sounded like that.  With the echo from the buildings I'm sure it added to the rising and fading of the sound level, plus the high/low tones added in.

I know the first time I heard the one back home I was taken aback over how it sounded.

eta:  That was a Federal Signals Thunderbolt model siren.  Here's a couple of videos showing how it rotates and the different type of tones.

eta again.  first vid won't play embedded, so here's I-potato link to see it

Meh.

These newfangled bee-boop-dee-bop-whoop noise-makers make annoying noises - but don't scream "WARNING!!!" to me like the Federal Thunderbolt 1000 series in Alert or Attack mode.  Growing up in the Cold War days probably has a bit to do with that.

Where I grew up, there were several sirens like this within earshot of the house, and one close by (the round kind with a cone on top). Usually we would hear the distant sirens before the closer one would go off. That made the "calm before the storm" incredibly unnerving.

I grew up with one of these about 20 feet from my bedroom window. VFDs on Long Island use(d) them for fire call outs.

As an adult, I have yet to find an alarm clock that will reliably wake me up. I wonder why.

Our new sirens here in KS are digital and you can play whatever you want over them.

We talk on ours in loud-speaker mode to notify of tests.

Very big-brotherish.

I'm guessing the point of sirens like this is to make sure it doesn't get lost in other noises. For instance, if you're near the edge of the effective range, one steady tone could be masked by the hum of your microwave if it's the same pitch, whereas a "creepy" one like this will sound markedly different from any one background tone.
