The guy that rear-ended my car with my family inside was shot twice by a homeowner he was attacking with a sledgehammer. He will spend the rest of his days hooked to machines and eating through a straw, according to the homeowner. The truck he was driving when he hit us was stolen and he was wanted on two counts of attempted murder of two police officers that he had tried to run over. Small world but this guy was definitely a loose cannon.

News article on shooting Says he was shot in the stomach but he was also shot in the neck.

Same thing I thought. He would have only been good for back fill if I had shot him.

I cant imagine using a sledgehammer as a melee weapon. Maybe the handle would work but I would think it would take too long to swing one with a #5 plus head

He had a short handled sledge, still tough to swing quickly.

The homeowner knew the guy and said he was a tweaker.

Huh. Maybe we were judging you too harshly in the other thread. "Listen to your gut," and all that. nvm, was thinking of a different thread.

Glad it seems like the perp won't be harming anyone else.

Police say a man shot an intruder wielding a sledgehammer in the stomach Wednesday night.

Terrible writing.

Glad justice was served.

My guess is he didn't get an obamacare policy so I'm sure that the taxpayers get to pay for that SOB the rest of his life. We can only hope that it's a short one.

There were a few on my original thread but I expect that in GD. Sometimes it's difficult to paint a clear picture of events for everyone to understand. All the more reason to train, train, and train some more on shoot/no shoot scenarios. Information gets missed or left out which could easily decide whether or not you go to jail. I've read countless times about people thinking they will handle a certain situation adequately only to find they freeze up, or worse yet, they make the wrong decision when something happens to them.

This dude was an accident looking for a place to happen. If he had been armed there is no doubt he would have shot at us.

The homeowner that shot him said he didn't think the guy would last very long. Liver, stomach and intestines destroyed. His spine was severed in 4 places leaving him quadriplegic and on a ventilator. The .38 took a nice chunk out of his neck too. He said after he shot him the second time the guy fell to his butt and slumped over against a wall, he then started vomiting profusely. From there the homeowner sat him back up straight but he was unresponsive and bleeding a lot.

One thing that struck me as odd is the homeowner told me the guy came at him with a sledgehammer, a few minutes later it's a crowbar. Maybe he just misspoke?

I would gladly have a beer with him. Funny thing is he was given a 2 year SIS on July 1st. He isn't allowed to be anywhere near a firearm during that time. Not sure what the charge was.

Defendant is placed on 2 yr SIS probation with the following special conditions: 1. Defendant shall complete 40 hours community service. 2. Defendant shall submit to random blood, urinalysis and/or breathalyzer tests as required by any enforcement officer or probation officer. 3. Defendant shall complete an alcohol and/or drug assessment as directed by the supervising probation officer, and successfully complete the recommended treatment plan, including inpatient and /or outpatient treatment as directed. 4. Defendant shall not own or possess any firearm or ammunition during the term of his probation. No firearms or ammunition may be located in the defendant's residence. 5. Defendant shall not occupy or remain in any residence or vehicle where a firearm is located, regardless of whether the weapon is in his personal possession or in the custody or control of any other person on the premises.

I spoke with the detective on the case and he wants to charge the guy with hit & run. I meet with him tomorrow to do a photo lineup. He also more or less verified that the guy is still in the hospital hooked to machines. Not sure what good it will do to charge him at this point but, he was wanted for attempted murder on two LEO's so they aren't pulling any punches.

The homeowner that shot him entered a guilty plea to possession of a controlled substance, a gun was confiscated during his arrest. Turns out both of them were long time friends. I had a feeling all of them were tweakers.

Met with a Detective today and my wife and I both picked the driver of the one ton truck out of a photo lineup. We also verified he is in fact now quadriplegic and still in the hospital. We chose to not file charges based on his current situation. No need to waste any more resources on the sack of meat than necessary, he got what he deserved. I'm just glad he didn't take anyone out with him.
