A high end one.  With a good screen, fast processor.  Decent camera.  Think S5 or the new Xiaomi phone.

Even though I have an iphone, and I'll probably end up getting a new iphone 6, it's not because I love apple.  It's the less of the two other evils, MS or Google.

So you'd have to type in shell scripts from the command line to do anything?

Isn't Android and iOS based on a Linux kernel?

Not released yet.  And for some reason I have little hope that it will be higher end hardware.

Nokia's N400 900 runs on Maemo, which I understand is Linux.  Camera is great and the phone is awesome.   I was way ahead of its time when launched.   I still have mine.

ETA: fixed phone model number.

Yes.
But I think iOS is based more on BSD Unix.

The new S5 would technically be a linux phone.  Back when I was "rooting" my android phones I ran a ROM called UbuntDroid, a version of Ubuntu which is essentially linux.

I'd say OP isn't asking for a Linux based phone.  He's asking for an open source Linux based phone.

I'd like one too.

I'd be satisfied with a phone that I can unlock and uninstall crap as I see fit.

I don't see MS, Google, or Apple making that available.

TreOS and Android are both based on Linux...  Part of why hacking them is called "rooting" them..

There already is one.

Android is a modified version of linux.

Also, as pointed out above, Ubuntu is trying to create a mobile version as well.

Came here to post about this. At this point, though, it's just a concept.

No, you'd drop the phone in a dock and use a keyboard, mouse, and large HD monitor to do stuff like that.

CyanogenMod, based of course, on Android, is as open source as open source gets.

http://www.cyanogenmod.org/

I'm taken to understand there will be a dedicated CM phone on the market soon.

Real men buy cheap phones off CL and root 'em, then install CM

Wrong. Android is a modified version of Java, running on a Dalvik virtual machine, using a Linux kernel to provide low level services.

Still closed source firmware.  And that's where all the hanky panky happens.

Have you looked at the Nokia N900?   Maemo is open source Linux and folks hacked it left and right.

Yes.

With my S4 rooted and some basic utils installed via BusyBox, I have a pretty full set of Linux commands.

Shit, I use curl, grep, sed and awk in a few Tasker tasks that interact with my home automation API.

Android pretty much is Linux built for a phone.

Because there is no money in a completely open source product.  If there was a dollar to be made someone would do it.
