I'll tell you what I miss.

Leaving the house at 8am on the bike, and riding to your buddies house to see if he can ride around and get into shit with you.

If he isn't around, you ride to your second choice. Then your third.

I miss when we all got together and were up to no good...which was nearly always.

Swimming in a private lake. Throwing rocks at the "rail police." Using CrossMan WristRockets to shoot paint balls at each other. Using Crosman 760's with a "3 pump rule" (lol) to play BB wars.

"Just be home by dark, or call."

"Hey mom, we're staying at Jason's house tonight. I'll ride home in the morning." lol

I remember it well.

I remember when a long - distance call was a big deal.

I remember how cool I thought it was when I was given a pager at work. Though I soon learned to hate the fucking thing.

Not a luddite by any means, but yeah.. we got along fine with libraries and phone books.

Had a Pager & my trucking broker would page me..... By the time I could find a place to park the truck with a pay phone, someone else took the load....

One extra load a month paid the cell phone bill for a month.... Anymore than that was pure profit.........

I remember in about 2002, a co-worker was foolish enough to give the bosses her cell number, and they burned the lines up, calling her, nagging her to come it to work non-mandatory extra hours. She said they "guilted" her into giving them the number and now she couldn't shut them up. She told me she wanted to "take back" the number she gave them, so they would leave her in peace during her time off.

This was a job that had no required or mandatory overtime, but the bosses were always desperate for us to do it and they would suck us dry 24/7 if we'd let them. Actually I was burned out on overtime from a previous job, so made it clear I wasn't going to do much of it with this job. (They understood this before they hired me.) I felt a certain defiant glee at never letting the bosses know that I had a cell phone. (If they'd asked, I wouldn't have given them the number. Even if they'd had the number, good luck with them actually reaching me with it in time, because I rarely left it on.)

I still don't give my cell number to everyone. Trusted friends, yes. People who only call when they want to nag me to do something for them, no.

.mil you have to.  Recall rosters are a bitch!

When my ex was in the marine corp we had to stay home and sit by the phone sometimes. At least now you can carry your phone with you while you do stuff.

I don't see how people can spin that as not an improvement? I can see who's calling and choose not to answer it if I want to.

It interesting that the OP is on the web, talking to virtual people, instead of at friends houses like everyone is waxing nostalgic over. I mean, it's not like they are mutually exclusive activities. Does he even see he irony in his post?

I think it just seems that way because we (yes arfcom) participate in social media. Most people I know go to zero discussion forums. Facebook and maybe news websites are their only interaction with web people.

I know a lot of folks involved in various hobbies (motorcycles, bee keeping, home repair, gardening ect) that could gleen so much info from discussion forums but don't really know what they are or seem interested.

When they do go its to a "website" not a discussion forum.

At least that's what I see. I think people are blaming certain negative traits of modern life and people on the web when there are other factors that account for those things.

I'm just not interested in wasting the kind of time it takes the old way.

I turn the phone off if I need a break (or just don't answer it) but the idea that I would actually waste more than a couple minutes to pay some bills and do some banking is crazy to me.

I'm with you there.  I am amazed at how many people in their 20's can forget to pay their bills or credit cards on time.  They need an app to text them reminders for everything.

I do hate smartphones because they eliminate any quality family time or chance for conversation when I see people together.

I wrote my little rant about the good old days, because I'm not sure that the world is any more dangerous now than it was then for kids. I think modern tech and 24 hour news cycles have moms and dads everywhere scared shitless to let their kids disappear for 12 hours like that.

I was kind of talking more about leadership by email stuff.  Hey why weren't you at that meeting?  What meeting?  Didn't you get the email?

And I didn't mind stopping by the bank on Friday to pick up fun tickets for the weekend.  Or getting a hard check instead of direct deposit.  Or walking in to pay an attendant for my gas or even better full service.

We had a rotary dial phone and b&w tv when I was young but I still prefer paying bills electronically.  It's not really a concern about forgetting, it's the convenience.

I guess the great thing is people who prefer the paper/stamp/mail way can go ahead and do it that way so everyone should be able to pick a way they prefer.
