In my most humble opinion; no it isn't. I still see the revolver as a useful tool for self defense. I personally own and carry revolvers. Even as a BUG when I worked as a patrol cop in Miami-Dade. I carry a well weather worned S&W 642 on my ankle. It served me well.

The compact revolver isn't a gun for a novice shooter. It is a small platform with a big punch. Accuracy is good if you do your part. The J-Frame models like the 642 are perfect for pocket carry. Excellent for a coat pocket because you can have you hand on it ready to go without drawing it. It will function while a small semiauto will jam.

The larger size revolvers still are good for home defense and woods carry. The classic K-Frame in the even more classic .38 Special can still be used to put bad guys down when needed. A .357 Magnum like a 3" Ruger GP100 makes a great woods gun or even a IWB CCW piece.

Right now I have a 3" GP100 had my bedside gun. I rotate my HD guns. Last week was my Gen4 GLOCK 22 and maybe next week will be my S&W 4506-1. After that maybe I'll put my S&W 64 on HD Duty.

In the end, though the semiauto has risen to it's rightful place and is now running great out of the box. The revolver still has some life in her and can fight the good fight.

Obsolete =/= no longer viable for use as intended.

The revolver has been obsolete for a long time, but is still a perfectly good option for a defensive firearm.

It was rendered obsolete in 1911. However, that does not mean it is now useless. I carry one all the time.

Then it isn't obsolete by your own definition.

It is very viable.

They have uses. I'd love to get a S&W Model 36, and send it to Heirloom Precision for their revolver conversion package.

IMHO, not that early.  I don't think the revolver was truly obsolete until autos started feeding JHP reliably.

Before about 1980, a .357 Magnum loaded with hollowpoints would be hard to beat as a defensive gun.

I share the same thought as you except I think it was closer to 1990. I still find the revolver to be an amazing gun that csn still hang out with the semiautos and in some ways beat them in performance.

My dad carried an "obsolete" Colt Trooper in Viet Nam (yup back when you could take your own gun to war) and closed out two bad guys with it.  Both bad guys were armed with semi autos.

From articles in magazines the S&W revolvers don't seem to be as good out of the box as the stuff back in the early 80s.
Given the need to hit a man sized target at extended ranges (maybe 100 yards) I and one of my best friends would both take our revolvers over any auto.
If i wanted to teach a novice to use a handgun effectively I'd teach them how to shoot an auto.
W.E. Fairbairn felt the same way.  He felt the perfect gun for him was a DA .44 or .45 in a cross draw.  The perfect gun for the Shanghai police was a 1911 with pinned safeties carried hammer down on empty chamber.  The pinned safeties and empty chamber because they just was no gun culture there and they were taught to rack the slide fast as the gun was drawn.

"Obsolete" does not mean "useless".

Revolvers are obsolete as fuck. Time has passed them by, and most of them have been replaced by proper, high capacity autoloaders in most roles.

They aren't without their uses, and far from "useless". 38 special and 357 magnum are well documented as being good as fuck at killing two-legged critters, and when you have the need for much more power in a small-ish size, for large four-legged critters, you can't get the power that you may need from an auto pistol. Such a pistol will have to be freaking huge to match the huge bullets that will be fired through it (Desert Eagle, I'm looking at you!).

Slide action shotguns are obsolete, too, but you won't see them going away anytime soon, like its revolver counterpart.

And just like a good pump shotgun, everybody should own at least one revolver (preferably of the .357 mag variety in either 4" or 6" barrel lengths).

Less useful, sometimes more specialized, not obsolete.

I carry a S&W 642. I carry it because I know that if I ever have shoot someone in order to save my own life then I will get 5 chances to do so. Is there newer technology? Yes. But I really like the reliability of 5 guaranteed shots.

I only have big bore revolvers.  I like their accuracy and ability to hit harder further, but tactically I think they suck.  But, what do I know, SF have been known to use revolvers.

Not obsolete, but definitely not the best choice for self-defence in my opinion.

Our next purchase will be a SP101 for my better half. She doesn't practice enough to feel confident with a semi-auto - the simplicity of a revolver appeals to her. So in her case, a revolver means the difference between her being armed or not. This is one of the situations where I guess the revolver wins.

Plus they're sexy

Pocket carry as well. The smooth and rounded shape of a hammerless snubbie works better than any auto in this role. I only own one revolver (a 642-1) and this is the reason I own it.

Answer: No, not yet. Since revolvers are relatively simple to operate, reliable, chambered in many modern cartridges that are very available, and the fact that many outdoors applications pretty much require magnum power (by default, almost always requiring a revolver) it is definitely not "obsolete". That being said, I find autos much more desirable for all of MY applications.
