In Puerto Rico, 45 percent of the population lives in poverty, and the unemployment rate is a solid 15 percent.
Those numbers aren't a good sign for any area of the United States, least of all an island whose name translates to “Rich Port.” But after years of recession, Puerto Rico's debt crisis finally seems to have reached a day of reckoning. Officials have opened a public campaign to field ideas for how to fix the crisis once and for all. A government website is accepting suggestions, and close to 400 ideas have been submitted. At least 150 have been accepted by a government committee for consideration. Among the ideas to be considered are calls legalize marijuana and prostitution, and to drastically cut back the amount of public holidays that workers on the island celebrate. http://fusion.net/leadership/story/puerto-rico-legalizing-prostitution-marijuana-fix-debt-crisis-586448 |

legalize and tax vices. Trying to control morality through prohibition is retarded.

Their politicians are as corrupt as anywhere else, just without a tax base to loot from. There is not common sense of working hard or getting anything done. Generally slothful and wasteful behavior is the norm. Any infrastructure left to them by the Feds/Military quickly turns to shit. The only thing that island has going for it is Bacardi and tourism in San Juan, but PR "pride" prevents them from selling priceless vacation spots to major developers. The same "pride" that made them want the Navy to close its base. If it wasn't a territory then I imagine some guy in a uniform with 4 stars on each shoulder would have claimed himself ruler by now and the population would be a fraction of what it currently is due to starvation, disease and general upheaval. |

Legalizing either for taxation purposes will not solve their debt problem.
Just like it wouldn't solve out debt problem. The problem isn't taxation...we collect plenty of taxes. The problem is over-spending. |

If my disdain for PR is bleeding through.....well that would be my disdain for PR. |

Hell, I thought prostitution was legal there. They certainly didn't hide it when I was there in the early 70's. Cat houses were out in the open. They were called clubs, one advertised "25 lovely hostesses continuously on duty"

If only Hawaiians had enough pride to have done the same, real estate might still be affordable, its bad when the majority of homeowners are haoles in California or japanese businessmen. |

The US wanted PR. It's not going anywhere. Get used to that. If anything, it will be a state. That is how the last plebiscite turned out.
The last Governor was a Republican. He cut spending, his staff, his salary and number of .gov workers. They voted him out. As usual, they are looking to raise money instead of cutting expenses. What some here don't understand is that yes, there are FSA there, there are also plenty of douchebag companies (Eagle-makes tactical shit- comes to mind) who pay a very low wage there and tell the workers "Hey, go get food stamps". Many PRs work very hard. And the food stamps they get are much less "dollar" wise than here. |

Genius move. The whores would bring tourists and probably a Sharpie factory.

Fine in touristy areas. in the inner city areas, nope. Though, I did get on a bus with my wife and we went through huge housing project. No problem. There is an art to it. Not recommended. My little Alabama farm girl wife was astonished. |

I thought ARFCOM's stance on low wages was to quit if you don't like the wages, free market, and all that. My cousin lives there. He had a good job but they wanted him to relocate. He didn't want to so he quit. Started a carpet cleaning business. He's doing very well and working very hard. Some people will take a low paying job as they feel they have no choices. It's hard to find a job in PR. I remember as a teenager trying to find part time work in PR. Couldn't do it. So, I spent my summers in Alabama cutting grass and washing dishes. |
